ZHL Soleil Royal

Sapele is the same as mahogany in more than just appearance. It's very coarse grained and likes to break instead of bend, even when wetted and steamed by application of heat. You might want to try buying some sticks of cherry and a local hobby store to replace the sapele for those sections. Cherry is fine grained and can be bent with less risk of breakage, and since it usually has reddish brown or tan color, it is easy to stain and oil it to match the sapele.
Thanks! That’s good information to know for the future. And yes I broke many pieces and cussed many times.

My discovery of this site is a little late. Im 37 and just now discovered shipbuilding as a passion that came out of left field. I’m partway through my second build, the first being the Golden Hind. I welcome any comments or suggestions that will further my knowledge of sailing ships. Here she is so far!

Any ideas on what I could use to simulate this part?
My gun carriages are so small, being 12mm long. 1.3mm wide brass strips were formed, cut and blackened to make caps. However, they still look to thick. Like everything in scratch building, you have to think outside the box, and get innovative. The next ones will be made with black paper that is about as heavy as 20 lb. printer paper. When coated with Krylon Satin Finish, they should last. These parts are going to be tiny!
