Bluenose build - DaveFx35

Rear railings completed.
I had to remake a few parts from scrap
It was a real clamping and gluing challenges.

The front rails are ready to go on tomorrow.
Good ideas on jigs to hold the aft monkey rails assemblies in place and with the turn down it is nicely done. I was surprised, as not doing the build, that the scuppers change their shape between the forward and aft runs which is a unique YQ presentation of those. You are proceeding to a rewarding finish. Rich (PT-2)

Superb job on those railings. Now you have the experience to tackle the front ones with confidence!

First off, thanks to all who provided encouragement and feedback. Much appreciated!
The quality of workmanship on all of the builds is quite remarkable.

Some progress on getting the finish on the wales. Still some touch-up/cleanup to do.
I started out thinking that I would just do the black using Feibings.
I got some bleeding which caused me to paint the white band at the waterline.
Still debating on going further with hull red down to the keel, but I think I'll stop where I am.

I started to look at the bowsprit installation and couldn't find anything in the manual/plans about it.
Am I missing something?

Hi Dave,
You painted hull look good. It shows her lines very well.
About the bowsprit: On page 41 there are a few photos at the top. It's very brief. The translated text does not provide much clarity.
On drawing 8-4, it is the picture left on top. B138-1 is the bowsprit. The Chinese text is: 'Bowsprit'
I can't (also) find nothing more.
Regards, Peter

I think the instructions leave a lot to be desired when it comes to the masts and rigging...sigh! We all have some homework to do there!
From everything I have seen the bow sprit goes up to the Samson post, thru the bowsprit bitts. There should also be a platform and support block. See pic below I found online...

Also note the hawser holes are at an angle and therefore make an elliptical shape opening, not a hole as shown by YQ. I will not use their round insert and make my own elliptical one, after drilling the holes at an angle. They have taken a lot of liberties on this kit, so if you trust them for historical accuracy...not good! I think Peter and Rich are on the right track by using reference material. I am starting to look into all of this as I get closer! ;)

It is strange that YQ has so little in this as there are so many stays, halyards, downhauls, and stays to both the stem cutwater and the hull sides above. . . not to mention the bowsprit foot ropes which vary in number and manner. Those footropes were a major hazard in fishing schooners as they were often not well tended by "fishermen" who were not rigging oriented as Bluewater seamen, and a good number of crew were lost when they broke. Rigging was typically only tended in a rebuild or major repair as the schooner had to return asap to fishing not being tied up at the dock. Rich

Dave, the white line really makes a difference! I had planned to include that myself. Then I thought about using red wood dye for the lower hull. Then water based paint. Now I’m thinking of doing something totally different! Lol... I’m not sure until it’s done at this point. But I want to do my own artistic version and call it the 100th anniversary addition...lol. So I’m brainstorming now. Anyway, I think you’ve done a great job so far and she’s looking very nice! Keep up the good work!

Just a reaction to the width of the white waterline which was and is in BNII 3 inches wide so in this scale it would be quite a bit more narrow unless you want to present it as you have. Every personal YQ schooner is their own and artistic license will be used which will have different effects. Just a thought for a nicely progressing build. Rich

Hello Dave. The black really outlines the shape of this hull beautifully. I agree with Rich that the white line is a great idea - maybe a slightly narrower band will be more in scale - but its entirely up to you.

@PT-2 @Dean62 Just a quick comment on the certain aspects of the rigging that are either not included or simplified. Gents please bear in mind that this Bluenose is an Admiralty-style design - many of these designs do not even include any rigging. @Davefx35 Dave - sorry to use your post for this, but as this is where the comments are, I thought it best to post here. Please have a look at Admiralty styles (all the builders' choices).

Fully rigged (but without sails).

gWhite 622-425.jpg
Partially rigged.

ggDSC_7335.jpg
On this excellent build of the USS Constitution - no rigging.

YQ thus merely exercised a choice. In the same vein you exercise the choice how complete and/or accurate you want your rigging to be.

I trust this helps.
Kind regards - Heinrich

These are very beautiful models with precise detailing. Thanks for sharing. Rich

The instructions are a bit iffy , anyway this is the one I built , just make sure your bowsprit is flush to the deck and built the Samson, bowsprit bits etc

Thanks Dean looking at the pictures attached I will adjust the Bowsprit accordingly

Looking at the forward deck of yours , the holes for the bowsprit Samson post is there , just file them to fit the Samson post
