Opened up the container for all the metal decorations / Bling today couple of things the stuff weighs a ton, will have to figure a way to attach this stuff to the ship so it doesn't come loose or fall off it is heavy!!!! I thought about the decorations and what I want to do as far as the paint, I decided to use a base color of Bronze and highlight in Gold leaf. it will tone it down a bit,
I am not much for Bling especially as much as there is on this ship ( The French Loved there Bling in those days didn't they!!)

I finally received my 1mm planking from ZHL and started the planking at the Keel I started with some Veneer for the stern area to get the angle I slant I needed and then ran two 6 mm planks along the keel that will be it for while down there. I will start the planking below the lower gun whale. I will re-layout the planking into 4 zones of four 6mm planks. it looks like I will need to use a drop plank in each zone and taper all the planks to 3mm at the bow if I want to assure the planks run from stem to stern. The stern is fairly cut and dry now that I already adjusted the stern area with a wide Garboard plank

Been working on the final planking!! This is going to be quite the job, especially assuring that the planking runs from stem to stern?? I am at the point where the planking wants to run up into the above planking? I USED CHEATERS OR DROP PLANKS!! at the bow and still have issues!! Well, the Issues for tomorrow! Other than that things have gone fairly well learning as I go along with the beveling and tapering I am glad I decided to use 1mm planking instead of the .5mm that came with the kit! It's a little rough in a couple of areas but I will block sand with 250 and 400 grit after I am done.

My Vasa has a similar bluff bow. My solution to the planking challenge was reported in my build log beginning here (and runs on for several pages):
It would require the use of 1 mm veneer sheets that match your selection of wood species so that might not be possible. And you also might not want to go to all the trouble - but I felt like I would not be doing my part if I didn't at least show you my solution (taught me by NMBROOK).

Looking good, I see you used the angle on the transom, 52 degrees I think? Don’t forget you still have to sand the veneer level. Although it’s thin and fairly uniform in thickness, it is still a good idea. Thanks, Dean. Yes, sanding remains to be completed but I need to veneer the little wing...

Yes, the bluff bow is an issue I started using walnut Veneer as larger drop planks to increase the upward sweep at the bow my planks start sweeping aggressively upward at bout the 12th plank down from the lower wale, that is where I am now I knew it ahead of time from the issues I had on the base planking but thought I had it figured out! but as they say, s___t happens!!! I read your info and I am too far along to rip out what I have already planked I decided to start planking from the keel up toward the area I am at now I know the planks will not bend in a downward direction there is no way!! I guess it is a choice to use more extra-wide drop planks running from 3mm at the stem to 12 to 18 mm with staggered butt joints to accept the incoming planks which I am not real happy using more than the 2 I already used or as shown run the planks up into the upper planks already laid! I am a little frustrated as I wanted to plank stem to stern but it is what it is!! Next time I will think about ordering a kit with a ship with a bluff bow!!!

Been working on for me the monumental task of finish planking the Hull!! I am at a point now that I feel I have accomplished what I set out to do and am pleased with the results I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have some block sanding to do after the planking is done and some cosmetic stuff but it looks good!! I am still struggling with the color scheme to go natural on the lower hull or paint it white. White look Good!! but it kills me to cover up all that work and beautiful wood!! also, Leave the wales natural or paint them black!! black might be the way to go?? I will however paint the upper areas Blue as all the La Soleil model ships I have seen are all painted above in blue. Decisions Decisions!!

As far as I am concerned, I have painted the wales in black (in fact not painted but used stain) and have left the lower and upper wales in their wood color, with Tung oil on them
I REALLY understand how hard that decision if to paint the lower hull with white stuff or not. The mahogany the hull of my last model looked so good that I left it unpainted. However, the next model will be painted on the bottom.

Yes, your right I am going to leave the hull natural and use Danish oil on the finish wales will be a dark color not sure what? and the upper planking will be natural Gilbert been following your Rigging looks Great!!

It took a while but I finally got the lower portion of the hull completed next will be the upper areas this will be tedious but much easier than the lower hull I will be using 1mm Cherry wood which I purchased from Max at ZHL! Been looking at some Ebony wood planking to cover the gunwales instead of painting the gunwales black or staining them a dark color?? ?? the stuff is $$$! but I think it will look good! I am trying my best to stay away from painting the beautiful wood!! except of course the upper areas I have been looking at using royal blue! It has crossed my mind just to leave that area of natural cherry wood?
The hull looks beautiful. I also bought some cherry strips, but thin 0.5mm thick ones for final planking of the upper sides. I was thinking of using walnut, but wanted to get a hull that is less dark than the last model build. Your build is coming along very well.
A question: is it the old "Soleil Royal! manufactured by OcCre or the new one "Soleil Royal.DE (Germany) manufactured by Artesania Latina. It is the last one, you can download the build step by step until the current day. here you have a very clear picture, but be aware, that the piece does not as a-b-c but you may get a part now, of which you will have to wait weeks or months before it uses. I have or had the build downloaded until the hull was covered delivery 50. I may have it, but not totally sure as I am little by little closing down the shop. will have a look and find the URL. I have still quite a few. I attach the Nº 1, but it looks like, that I can open it here.-el capi
if vis the old one, I build in the year 2000. it took me 4 years to get all the pieces and drawing. the instruction book went away, but I still have some drawings in general and about the riggen. I have too, all the planking list -about 300 mm long- divided into 3 pr pack. Have too nearly all the Metal figures, gunport etc. i took them out before it went to the waste. they are completely free for everyone

Thanks, and yes I think Cherry wood will look great in the above areas. I thought about planking the gunwales from ebony wood But when I reviewed all the model ships of the La Soleil there were none that had those areas in a dark color more on lighter color!! So I guess I will just keep them Cherry with the rest of the upper area
