Vasa - 1:65 DeAgostini [COMPLETED BUILD]

Hello Friends,

I'm taking a bit of time away from actively working on my Vasa, but today was quite nice outside, so I risked a road trip. I hope you enjoy these outdoor photos...

It's good to stop every once in a while and remember what has been accomplished. I am truly grateful for the many, many people who have helped me, corrected me, and encouraged me along the way. I have been blessed by your shared expertise and friendship, and I'm excited to see what the future holds!
What a treat to see these colors as they really are!

Hi Paul,
I know I am a month late to comment and I cannot really add to what others have already said but sensational comes to mind along with stunning.

Cheers,
Stephen.

Looks amazing in an outdoor setting, beautiful workmanship, I can only dream....
Oh and not another word from you about not being worthy sitting right up there with the best builds on this site, you are up there with the best.

Paul,

WOW!! your Vasa is "over-the-top-amazing -- I know that you have more than praised my Corel example in PMs (big thanks). It does NOT hold a candle
to your current build.
Your work is stunning in all regards - close up images (most detract) yours add to the exemplary level of super small details that
you have superbly well articulated. I know that you have taken a few ideas from my log - SO glad that a few of my ideas (very few) helped you achieve this incredible build.
Yes do take some time "off" it will rekindle positive spirits for starting the yards, sails and LOTS on new needed rigging lol

I stand in awe - well done indeed!!! Also having the most followed build at SoS also says something does it not?

Regards,

Well shoot, John, I'm blushing.

FYI SOS members: John was operating under another name when he built what I consider to be one of the signature Vasa builds anywhere (and I have searched the globe for Vasa builds on most every major forum). Many things make his build amazing - but perhaps most impressive of all is the scale. Most Corel kits of these big boats come at 1:100 (recall Kurt's legendary LaCouronne) - and he bashed the hoo-hoo out of it. This is where I was first introduced to the idea that we don't have to build according to the parts in the box (and according to the instructions in the box). I once told him: when I play model ship builder with all my friends, I always ask if I can be you ("John").

Here is a link to the completed build here on SOS if you've never seen it:

The actual build log (well, the second half of it) can be found elsewhere (PM me and I'll send you the link).

Of course, you are correct John when you observe that I 'borrowed' ideas from your build. As you know my tops (mars) are a total rip-off from your build...but there are so many others. In some ways that's true for all the builds on the forum, isn't it (we all borrow stuff)? I hope one day someone will look at my work and be inspired to add things to their own build (better yet - improve on my work and make it their own).

And to be sure the current crop of Vasa builders is looking over each other's shoulders. Peter leads the way, but Daniel and I have developed a friendly working relationship to our mutual benefit. The list of previously completed Vasa builds are more than can be mentioned but each of them adds to the information base and inspiration.

Paul,
Many thanks indeed. So kind of you to link my completed images within your log as well. I still think that as far as - in miniature - replicating the Vasa as it was originally makes yours a brilliant example. You have actually perfectly shrunk the Museum's 1/10th lol...Your painting details of the hundreds of figures is also an out of the park "grand slam"
Apologies to our international members that may not be familiar with baseball idioms. BeerI ...(all of us)... will look forward to your return to Vasa. Take your time lol -

PS: My frustrations with the hundreds of rigging lines and some solutions are noted in my log lol..Here's a partial look at your future.

STOP SCARING PAUL, oldflyer. Cautious He's nervous enough as it is. NO, Paul, rigging is NOT like this! If you rig one line at a time, it's quite organized and neat, even if things get tighter access-wise. Even though this ship looks like a total mess, the builder knows what and where each line will go when he gets to it.

Nailed it!

Hi Paul! Well, here I am late again by 12 DAYS. I wondered occasionally while I hadn't heard from your build and I just remembered heck, sometimes I don't get update notices. Every time I see your ship in natural light the patina just gets more and more beautiful. You presented a fantastic group of photos I especially like the bow shot looking toward the stern. The inline shot shows an incredible view of all the shrouds. I'm going to have to make a screen saver of it. Well, you keep me on my toes and provide a great example for me to learn from. I shall try to keep a better monitor on your progress.

I think Paul is low key a master ship builder and just wants us to assume he is new because his work is so detailed and clean I get so confused on how he even does it LOL

A bit late to the party Paul, those outdoor shots highlight both the quality of you work and the natural warmth of the timbers used.

And last but not least, you are a better gardener than me ROTFROTFROTFROTFROTFROTFROTFROTFROTF

Kind Regards

Nigel
