HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

I see gaps on the bow.
maybe fill them with pieces of the same wood, that works
That is very interesting Stephan! Those gaps were not there when the hull was planked. With the walnut I have never had an issue with the wood contracting or expanding - it seems like the oak is more sensitive. In any case the hull portion that extends above the deck, still needs to get a second layer of inner planking. Then I will pay attention to that.

In that case it looks like the planks want to go in their straight form. I like oak, for my furniture but not for modelling. Especially such a small ship makes it hard to work with. Ronald Vis and his Commerce de Marseille uses oak for the frames, but I seen these frames and they are big. In that case it looks to me okay to use oak. But I tried once oak, and that was no succes, the grain was not in scale. Hope you can fix this.

Thank you very much, Mark! The center canopy is such a definitive feature that I had to get it right. :)

Thank you, my friend! Yes, the stern is next - I might come up with a surprise where I break away completely from Hoving. Kolderstok and De Weerdt's plans, and follow the diary drawings of De Veer.:)

Dear Friends

The term "kit bashing" has now been well established on SOS for a while. However, to me it is a term that I do not like. Sure, if you want to "bash" your kit, it is up to you. What I am doing is most certainly not that. I prefer to call it "kit modification" or "kit enhancement" as it indicates a planned and structured approach of what is being done to make the kit better - very much like what @NMBROOK Nigel is doing in his superb build of the Sovereign of the Seas. In my case, there is nothing wrong with the @Kolderstok kit - what I am doing is my own interpretation based on the plans of Ab Hoving and is thus my personal choice - it is certainly not something that is required to make the kit acceptable.

In any case, in the buildup of the center canopy and the stern (the details of which I will certainly not bore with you, I thought I would just share two pics to show you how radically different the new build is from WB #1.

The next pictures will be of the completed center canopy and buildup of the rear bulwarks and rear deck.

Thank you so much for watching, following and just being the great friends that you are. This one is for all of you!

This is quite different from WB1 my friend, is this canopy covering what you ment by mentioning the " de Veer's diary "??
It sure is going to look verry good

Indeed, Peter - totally different. No, the covering of the center canopy is still as per Ab's plans as you can see below. The De Veer diary will come into play a little later - I am still working up the guts for that! ROTF

Why do you have to work your guts up my friend, can/will you lift a tip of the vale??
Hoi Peter. No, I am playing around with the idea of railings at the stern as my favorite picture of De Veer shows. Heinrich and making railings are not good friends - hence the guts that I have to summon up if this is the way that I choose to go.

Other pictures by De Veer though, (including the famous Plaat 8) show solid bulwarks.

Then of course, Hoving, @Kolderstok, and de Weerdt all show solid bulwarks, so that is probably the safest way to go.

Maybe they use the wood of the bulwarks to heat the stove. That's why you maybe see this only on this drawing. In that stage of the travel they had already problems to keep up.
