HMS Victory Occre 225 - build log

Hey Crypto,

very nice work and neatly finished. Looks really great. Are you sure you want to plank it completely? Your frames look great and offer a great view into the interior of the HMS Victroy?

Cheers

My idea is to plank only one side. Also the deck will be partly closed one side and fully closed on the other side, so light can enter and illuminate the interior cannons.

Short update: I have added small ornaments above the gun ports. Originally, they were shiny brass, but I prefer to have them not stand out too much. So I made them black. Also, I still need to improve some paint work here and there.

Good morning Crypto,

very nice details. You have drawn the entrance gate very nicely. Can you take a larger photo of it?

Best regards

Another short update, since I'm swamped with work: I've been working on the front section, where I'm trying to balance the characteristic black sides with the brown keel and the coming decoration. I'm happy with the looks so far, despite moving away from the original ship and manual altogether ;)

These weeks, I have been continuing with the top railings. I kept the walnut strips their natural color (just oiling it a bit). Next up is the back-side. The windows consist of a metallic reflecting paper. For the side panels I deviated from the manual by not using as many lime-wood strips to keep the mahogany back still a bit visible.
So far I'm happy with the progress and result; next update will take a while due to the summer vacation.

If you are referring to the rigols, they were made of wood originally so no harm in painting them. I am curious to know if the kit shows them dug into the wales. as in your photos. This would defeat their purpose completely as they were there to divert water from going into open ports, not for decoration. Their location in relation to the ports can be seen on the contemporary model below.
Thanks Crypton.

As an obvious fan of one of Nelson's ships have you listened to Adam Preston's series? https://shows.acast.com/trafalgar-squared He told me the other day that they are making progress with the script and one of the sets for the film production of the story of Nelson and will hopefully see it come to fruition in the next couple years.

I am doing the same kit. Interesting how you completed the bottom of the hull. I did as well partially to leave the ribs showing. Also like the black. Great work.

May I ask where you got the ship work fixture from? I have been looking for something simular to hold my ship while working, and have not seen anything I like until this. TIA.

It truly is one of the best things I have purchased over the years of ship building. I bought it from a company in England called Hobby Zone. I also saw you can order them from Poland. When I read your request I couldn’t actually remember but after such brain racking and web surfing I was reminded. I also saw while doing so that its looks like there is one on Etsy for about $100 which is about what I paid for mine 6 years ago.

Unfortunately, they will not ship to the US...However, Hobby Zone USA does have a few of them (https://hobbyworld-usa.com/index.ph...ing-slip-hz-pms1&controller=product&id_lang=2). The price is $101, including shipping. You have to love Google Image Search....

That’s sweet. I also have more tools but I don’t let her know. We built a new house when I retired 6 years ago and I made sure I have a 600 square foot shop complete with 15’ and 30’ work bench. My wife thinks I’m building a naval museum.
