1682 HMY Fubbs 1:24 scale

Hello Ship Mates, Last night the little fellows and I glued the cheeks on to our mizzen mast. This AM we dry fitted on the previous built mizzen platform and it looked good but when we dry fitted on the mizzen top mast [ un tapered ] it was an hoarer story. This is when the Admiral Bernadette and I realized this would never do. With the Mizzen top mast close to 37" or 940mm and to add sails to this would be just too much.
We welcome any feed back on this situation, please speak freely, other wise the sails on our YMY Fubbs is out of the question, it is too bad that I could not see this in advance, just had to have sails.
Regards Lawrence

Good afternoon Lawrence. My approach would be to exclude sails. I personally feel it would look out of place on a section build. Once the shrouds, booms, yards and associated rigging are attached the look and feel will add to an already impressive section build. My 2 cents. Cheers Grant

Hello Grant, Thanks for your suggestion, I am still up in the air as to know just what to do! I believe that I will leave it ride for a few days before deciding what to do.

Hello Ship Mates, Well after a lot of thought and a lot of reconditions that all were good and well worth considering the little fellows and I have decided to reduce the over haul mizzen mast height by 1/3. This looks very good to us the only fly in the ointment is the mast palatiform is a bit over size. This matter I will pass along to my ship mates, [Do I keep it or do I build a smaller platform?]
Regards Lawrence

Good morning Lawrence. Eish a difficult one. Once again I think it comes down to builders preference. What I would do (although difficult to access from photos only), is one of two options. I personally would not change any scale aspects of the build. Your hull etc are so good and accurate.
1. I would leave off the mast and rigging and just display it with mast stump or
2. I would keep to scale and present standing rigging only. May look weird however the accuracy is maintained?
My 2 cents …
Cheers Grant

Hello Grant, I do thank you for your honesty, This has been a difficult decision for me to make. All though the mast are not true to scale I very much like the new look. My Admiral Bernadette and I do want to add a set of sails, some how just the mast stub just will not do it I also wanted my my ship to look just a bit different. Some how my picture just dose not justify the new look, yes not true to scale but then again I can live with it.

Hello Ship Mates, The little fellows and I had planed to start working on the Mizzen shrouds. We discovered that the resin deadeyes that came with the kit though they look great they can not be used for rigging. We checked our stash and found that we did not have enough of the proper size. These we put on order and should have them in a couple of days.
So we did a little painting on the two ships officers, just about complete now. Then we decided to work on some of the ships lower deck cargo. I would imagine that this area of the Fubbs would be crammed full, but we are not going to do that.
Regards Lawrence

Hello Ship Mates, Our deadeyes have not arrived as yet, maybe later on today or tomorrow. To fill in a bit of time the little fellows and I have installed a sort of a main mast so as to have a point to attach the Mizzen Stay, not the best idea we ever had but it is the best we could come up with. We have also dug out our our old hand made serving machine, with this we served the Stay around the mizzen mast and served a eye and a mouse we also built and installed the Crow's Feet , and there tension blocks. All of this is dry fitted until we can install the Mizzen Shrouds.
Regards Lawrence

Hello Ship Mates, It has been a very strange week here in the Old Ship Yard as the little fellows and I built our deadeyes and there hangers, blackened the brass and built the channel chain straps and installed them. Then we realized that we could have used the supplied deadeyes that could have saved a lot of work. Then we sized on our deadeyes to our shrouds an the lanyards then we realized that they two long, so it was back to the redo center again. We reattached the mizzen stay and now we can continue to clime a little higher.
Regards Lawrence

Good morning Lawrence. You and the little fellows are owning this. The seizing of the shrouds looks brilliant. Quick question: what wood did you use to make those deadeyes. I can’t get mine right (using lime dowel ) which is too soft. Cheers Grant

Hello Grant, I thank you for your kind words and nice comments. Sorry I miss led you on the deadeyes ,I do not have a lathe and to cut these many by hand would be quite a task, I have cut some in the past using a hard wood. I think lime is a bit to soft to get some nice lines.

Hello Ship Mates, The little fellows and I have run into another road block in our HMY Fubbs. We wanted two Mizzen Shrouds and one Mizzen Back Stay. We built her as such but when we added the Back Stay it lay across the after end of the mast platform. So we stripped it all back down again and built her with three Mizzen Shrouds. This was due to the over haul mast shorting.
Regards Lawrence
