1682 HMY Fubbs 1:24 scale

O
Hello Ship Mates, The little fellows and I have run into another road block in our HMY Fubbs. We wanted two Mizzen Shrouds and one Mizzen Back Stay. We built her as such but when we added the Back Stay it lay across the after end of the mast platform. So we stripped it all back down again and built her with three Mizzen Shrouds. This was due to the over haul mast shorting.
Regards Lawrence

Good morning Lawrence. It looks good with the 3 shrouds. If you going to do ratlines this may even be the better option. If you include the top mast and top gallant mast(not sure if the Fubbs has a gallant in the Mizzen) you will need those back stays somehow- (IMHO). Wow the “globe” lanteen looks amazing. I don’t know how I missed that previously. Cheers Grant

Hello Grant, Thanks for your very kind words and your nice comments. Yes I do intend ratlines and also a top mast. Not sure on the back stays as yet, will have to sleep on that one.

Hello Ship Mates, The little fellows and I have installed the new deadeyes both on the ships channels and also on the mizzen platform. We have installed and tied off all of the lanyards on the ships channel deadeyes. We have also built and installed the Futtock Shrouds below the mizzen platform. We have also installed the mizzen mast cap and topmast.
Regards Lawrence

Nice work on the ratlines, your spacer works very well.
Mike

Some very nice work with the ratlines on the also very nice shrouds, Lawrence.
Regards, Peter
Hello Peter, I thank you for your very nice words and nice comments. We still have the top mast ratlines ahead of us but then again they are rather short, but with a lot of reaching from my chair.
Regards Lawrence

Hello Ship Mates, Work continues on our HMY Fubbs, This AM the little fellows and I added the Mizzen Top Mast shrouds, added the Deadeyes and laced the lanyards trough the deadeyes and tied them off to the top mast shrouds, and used diluted white glue to secure the ends, this is where I am now waiting for the glue to dry.

Hello Ship Mates, The little fellows and I have started working om the more detailed fun stuff. We have taken the previously tapered Mizzen Sail Spar, added a secure binding and added a lift block. We have served a sling for the upper lift block. We have built a set of Parrals Beads for the Mizzen Spar to ride on.
Regards Lawrence

Hi Lawrence.
I can see that the cross jack rigging is a work in progress and it's currently on the stern side of the mast (and can't make its mind up which side of the stays it wants to be!) :).
It looks like you can easily swing the cross jack to the other side of the mast, but the rigging also needs to be on the forward side of the mast which is a little bit more of a problem.

I hope this helps.

Hello Arthur, Thanks for your very concerned comments and also your great sense of humor. I am sorry that I have mixed you up just a bit. The sail yard that you mistook for cross jack is but a yard to carry the mizzen sail. I was just trying to show some details of how I thought this sail would have been. I will attach a painting of the HMY Fubbs , she is on the right in this picture. I do not have a lot to go on in the rigging of this sail, just trying to have it displayed as I see it in this painting.
Regards Lawrence

Ha! Petersson doesn't show the rig for a lateen sail. (You do need a crossjack to spread the mizzen topsail.)
I'll have to have a look at Lees. :)

Does this help?

Hello Arthur, Thank you ever so much for your very interesting and also packed full of information. Yes Lennarth Petersson dose not show this type of sail, and that is to bad, but I do have most of it all figured out. I do not like the crows feet at the top of the Mizzen Yard sail as this is not showing in the painting, at least that is what I believe I see, will have to take a second look, Your post answers a lot of my did not know details on this type of sail. Yes I do intend to add a Crossjack Yard and also a Top Mizzen mast yard, but this will come a bit later.
Arthur do you have any information as to how this sail was constructed? I believe the sail panels were vertical with a couple of rows of Reef Points, Any info. that you may have Points and Reef Cringles, any info. that you may have on this point would be very much appreciated, I thank you in advance.
Regards Lawrence

I haven't found a drawing of how a lateen sail was made up but the spankers were made with vertical panels parallel to the aft edge of the sail.

There is a drawing showing a single reef band running from the fore corner to a point about 60% up the aft edge of the sail, Interestingly, this says 'after 1680'.
Here's what I assume was the earlier arrangement:

I'm puzzled by the right hand diagram, it looks like a spanker.

Hello Ship Mates, WE have added the Lateen Spar lift blocks and a cleat on the lower Mizzen mast. We have also added the top end of the Lateen Spar lifting rigging and also added a cleat to the lower Mizzen Mast. This may not be the exact way that the Mizzen was rigged on the HMY Fubbs, but we believe it just may have been this way. We do welcome any comments that our ship mates may have, good or bad we will look at them all.
Regards Lawrence
