Ciao JJ LadAnd so it begins…
With what I expect to be a 2-year project, this Amerigo Vespucci build will deviate from what would have been a gorgeous static model, to hopefully a fully functional RC ship that remains true to its design. As there are so many threads that do a super job of detailing the AV build, I’ll focus primarily on my efforts to fabricate an RC version of this marvelous ship.
To that end, there are numerous new challenges that will need to be addressed….namely:
The balance between scale accuracy and the allowances required to account for RC functions, including:
- Propulsion
- Steering
- Sail control
- Maintenance access
- Battery access
- Ballast
- Transportation (to the pond)
Then there’s the hull construction itself. The materials provided with the kit are not entirely suitable for a wet environment. So alternate materials and/or water-proofing will be an area of focus.
My intention is to proceed in three stages. The first will be to complete the hull with a functional propulsion system. Once waterproofing has been established, the appropriate motor, prop, steering gear, and ballast have been selected, I’ll focus on sail control.
Sail control presents major challenges. First, I need to learn how these ships sailed the seven seas . Do I need all sails to be functional? How much control do I really need? Do I need to automate the furling and unfurling functions? So much to consider.
Lastly, I’ll focus on scale details. I’m thinking of cladding the hull in copper to accurately reflect the actual ship. Not sure I can accomplish this detail yet still have a seaworthy hull.
I’m sure more challenges will pop up during the build…. So buckle up and stay tuned.

Mi piace fin da subito il tuo approccio a tutte le problematiche.
Su un forum italiano stavo seguendo un progetto analogo ma si è fermato. Spero che prosegua.
Le difficoltà sono tantissime, lasciami dire che solo perchè ci stai provando sei un grande e hai già vinto per me.
Sto quasi finendo un modello di goletta/piroscafo, la mia aspirazione era di farne un modello navigante sia a motore sia a vela. Conosco molte problematiche serie che ho dovuto affrontare: galleggiamento (non è scontato), stabilità e propulsione.
Io avevo il vantaggio di disegnare lo scafo da solo tu no, tu devi affrontare maggiori diffcoltà per il fattore di scala. Infatti quello che va bene per una nave vera (1:1) non va bene per un modello in scala.
Ho travato molte difficoltà con la scala 1:60 figuriamoci con la scala 1:84.
Se ti avessi potuto consigliare prima ti avrei detto di scegliere la nave Palinuro (è un'altra nave scuola della marina militare italiana) perchè è una "barquentine" (nave goletta in italiano) e non una "full rigged ship". Secondo me le vele auriche (trapezoidali) sono più facili da manovrare e funzionano meglio nelle andature controvento rispetto alle vele quadre.
La tua capacità di prevedere tutte le problematiche è encomiabile. La previsione è essenziale.

I'm almost finishing a schooner/steamer model.
My goal was to make a model that could sail both with motor and sail.
I know of many serious problems I've had to face: buoyancy (not a given), stability, and propulsion.I had the advantage of designing the hull myself, but you don't. You face greater challenges due to the scale factor.
In fact, what works for a real ship (1:1) isn't suitable for a scale model.
I encountered many difficulties with the 1:60 scale, let alone the 1:84 scale.
If I could have advised you earlier, I would have told you to choose the Palinuro (another training ship of the Italian Navy) because it is a "barquentine" (nave goletta in Italian) and not a "full-rigged ship."
In my opinion, gaff sails (trapezoidal) are easier to handle and work better when sailing upwind than square sails.
Your ability to anticipate all the problems is commendable. Foresight is essential.
