Artesania Latina Anatomy of Lord Nelson’s HMS Victory 1805

Hi, from what I’ve read, the 2 shot lockers were around the main and fore masts
This is really interesting. Could you tell us where you read this as I never noticed shot lockers near the foremast. This makes sense but where would it go? There is the light room, filling room and magazine taking up that entire area.

Brian Lavery describes the shot lockers, magazines, and filling rooms in The Arming and Fitting English Ships of War. He writes that in addition to the two at the main mast, by the middle of the 18th century there was sometimes a shot locker aft of the main magazine. This would put it pretty far aft of the foremast which typically passed through the light room on medium and large ships.

Then again there were variations all the time so perhaps Victory was an anomaly.

Wow, that’s a question, over the past 20 odd years( since deciding to do , and make many alterations to the DelPrado victory part work)I have browsed many books and forums relating to HMS Victory so not exactly sure of the reference source but something that I just dragged back up from the hold of my brain

Search on line for “An audio tour of HMS Victory “ part 1 , in which there is a description of the shot lockers on Victory

Thanks Alan. The audio does say there are two at the main mast and one in the area of the foremast. I wish there was a contemporary drawing showing this. One of these days I hope I will get there and go on board. In the meantime, the audios, videos and so many things from the Mariner's Mirror will be fun to listen, watch and read.

Hi, glad you found Mariners Mirror helpful
I see you are based in the USA, I am fortunate to live in the UK (about 2.5 hours drive from Portsmouth) and have visited and been on board many times over the years taking many photos of areas I was working on with the DelPrado upgrade I was doing

We made it to RMG some years ago when they still had a ton of models on display. Next time we go to England I try for Portsmouth and Buckler's Hard. :)

Thanks Alan, I have wanted to visit after doing over a year of research on Buckler's Hard and HMS Euryalus back in 2008/2010. It has taken too long, but I still hope to get there.

Update on Instruction Video #4

As you may recall, in video #3 we are instructed to make a large sheet from 4x1.5 strips from which we cut out the pieces for the hold compartment etc. Building the sheet wea not an issue but when it came to cutting the shapes , I wanted to use my powered bench scroll saw for speed and ease but found that even the fine blade tended to pull the strips apart, so I had to stop, re glue them and carry on I persevered with this to complete video #3 as there weren’t that many parts. Video #4 is a continuation of this process but with a lot more shapes to cut out
So I decided to source some 1.5 thick ply sheets and cut the shapes from that which made it much easier. Once the shapes were cut, I scribed the planking effect before adding the bracing strips. Once the stain was applied I was rewarded, as I knew I would be, for my earlier efforts

Good work Alan and steady progress on this very large project.

Like others, I am resisting temptation of ordering this kit...........for now.........those YouTube videos don't help the cause. Artesania really have gone all out with this kit.

Instructions Video #6 completed
I changed the instruction sequence on this video and installed the ballast before fitting all the upright support timbers as I thought it would be easier and faster without them in the way

fantastic work...can you give a little insight as to your thoughts now that you are 6 videos in....do you miss not having written instructions? Any surprises from your build to the videos? How would you rate your overall enjoyment of the build so far.....love the pics and it really looks beautifull.....

Hi, thanks for your comments
I quite enjoy the video instructions to be honest, you can pause, zoom in etc and move forward quickly to see what’s coming to get an overall picture of what you are trying to achieve at the end of each section. Not sure I’m that fussed about written instructions but although you get a deck plan of each deck for reference, I would have liked to see some more detailed plans and cross sections.
One issue that’s raised it’s head as I start video #7, I was dry fitting the horizontal orlop deck support beams and noticed that most of the upright support posts and some of the compartment walls fitted in earlier videos were a bit too high. The compartment walls could be down to uneven planking at the bottom of the ship but the upright posts mostly sit on the hull framing. I looked forward a few videos to see if they come up into and flush with the top of orlop deck, but that doesn’t seem to be the case, so I’ve had to make some adjustments that has set me back a day or two
Other than that, I’m greatly enjoying the build so far

Can you post a sketch and or photo. The pillars usually sat under the deck beams but the bulkhead posts ended flush with the top of the beam against which they sat.
Maybe the pieces in the kit are too long or the bulkheads (walls) are too short????
Allan

The pillars are shown in some of the photos in the video #6 completed post
All the posts are individually cut to size from 3x3mm timber strips as per the instructions video . When dry fitting the beams only about 3 posts actually touch the side of them the rest of them come up in between them, and yes, they are all placed in the correct positions according to the instructions
I have just completed re installing them and they will finish flush on the underside of the orlop deck, rightly or wrongly I’m sticking wit that

Instructions video #8 completed

While I was sanding down I knocked the assembly on the bench and it came apart (clean break fortunately) it occurred to me that it would be easier to install all the window and door grilles if it were in two parts, so I carried on like that until it was complete then re fixed the parts together .
Those little hinges and latches can try your patience
