BALDER, Vlaardingen Herring Lugger from 1912, scratch build scale 1:50 Plate-On-Frame

Good morning Peter. What a pleasure catching up the past few pages. A very cool article in De Spil and very well deserved. I did have to use a lot more translation tools than I expected- Afrikaans close but not that closeROTF. Cheers Grant
Thanks, Grant. This proves once again that one-on-one communication in real life is still the best conversation. You might not understand everything that's being said, but the non-verbal communication already makes a lot clear. Life emojis are the best...
But we do our best with this communications her on the SoS. :)
Regards, Peter

How can I respond to this remarkable compliment, Chuck? With a quick YouTube search I found a performance at St. Martin in the Fields. A truly beautiful piece of music.
I'm deeply grateful for this compliment.
Regards, Peter
Peter! You responded very well by your action. The compliment is no less than your effort and attainment of excellence deserve.

Blessings.
Chuck

Happy Birhday (We dont want too many off those!!)
Mmm … : It has been 'scientifically proven' that the people who can celebrate their birthdays the most, often live the longest.:) Don't we all want that, as long as health allows it?
PS: It’s a reply on a post in someone’s others build-log. I won’t spoil his log with this ……..
Regards, Peter

Someone once told me the secret to reach 100 - Get to 99 then be very careful!

Seeing mini Balder next to big Balder was fantastic! When you see one against the other you can see that you have captured the very soul of the ship!

Your idea is not unique Peter......

Built in 1985 by C. Lühring and Schiffko for the German Navy, this remarkable vessel features a unique hinge mechanism at the stern that allows the entire hull to open like a giant pair of scissors — up to 65 degrees — creating a 40 m² (431 sq.ft) collection area. It’s equipped with seven storage tanks capable of holding up to 790 m³ (around 5,000 barrels) of recovered oil, making it a powerful asset in environmental protection.

What a great find of you, Stephan.:)
And 10 times more capacity: 5000 barrels. The Balder +/- 500 …….

I fell behind with your remarkable build Peter but have thoroughly enjoyed catching up this morning. I think multiple “wows” are well deserved and I can only agree and support all the compliments you have received. This is truly a fantastic build.

Johan @RDN1954 said it well some weeks ago “Looking at what you accomplished so far is a piece of art and absolutely deserving imitation from others”. But to be honest I don’t think there are many modellers able to produce such fine work as yours and to this degree.

Thanks for this compliments and very nice words, Roger. :)

After the rather intensive weeks leading up to the "sHaring the City" meeting, where I wanted to show my Balder in a somewhat presentable way with the spray-painted hull plates, I needed some time to get new energy.

I started working on both stoves. They are solid sheet steel stoves:

The left one is in the galley and the right one is in the forecastle.

The galley, however, is in the starboard section:

That's why I was already planking the alcove and adding a section of flooring. That will be the only part of this construction section that's been fitted out.

And the position of the stove in the forecastle:

For the detail-lovers: the stove has four lashing eyes for extra securing in rough weather. And a few of the "stoppekiste" have been replaced with ones in a more acceptable color ....... ;)

It will be a while before I spray-paint both stoves black. First, I still have to make the two stovepipes. In the galley, that won't be much of a problem. However, the one in the forecastle also opens onto the starboard side ....... so that will have to be divisible as well .......... Redface

To avoid cleaning the air-brush to often, I'm now going to start working on the Donkey Boiler:

Which I'm building based on this drawing and an old photo. That will be the next challenge ...... :)
Regards, Peter
