Hi,

I just start my Belem Model from Artesania Latina. I purchased it in Canada at 300 $ CAD tax and shipping included. It is a bargain if I look elsewhere on the web.

Let me first show you what is inside the box. Sorry, but I do not have so much pictures and I am beginner in showing this kinf of picture. I also purchased the Monography from AAMM at the following link : AAMM store

For now, everythings seem's good and are usual AL goodies.

And the work on the model begin :

1) Take care of some thin plywood pieces. They delaminated easily when cutting.
2) Do not necessarily follow step-by-step the instruction. Go further on the instruction and figure how the pieces should be insert and when. Spcially to be sure of the emplacement on the first floor cabin.
3) I used CA and Gorilla wood glue.
4) I paint with Vallejo paint : white prime, white acrylic, brown and orange mix together. I used waterbases SAMAN varnish in between some paint layer and in the final coating.

Looks like you will have a blast building Her, and we will have fun watching her build progress. ;)

This is really a special kind of kit - not so much full rigged ship kits are existing. Many Thanks for showing us in detail the kit and start the building log.
Wish you Good luck and success - and show us as often as possible some updates - will be interesting to see

I'll watch with interest as I have the same kit which will be my next build in a few months

I finished the sails for my San Juan and want to close this work for Christmas. The ship is destinate to be given to my son in law. Thereafter I will continue the Belem.

Thanks for your interest.

Hallo @Fish&Chip
we wish you all the BEST and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY

How is your work on Belem going?

Thank you Uwe,

I took a break to explore Arduino for making some Flight Simulator hardware. But I am working on my Belem since two week. I am on the hull planking. I will take some pics this week to post on the forum. I did not follow the AL method for it and I am happy with the result.

Firts, I dislike the tinting result for the floor planking with the wood used. My 16th galleon from AL (20408) gave me better results. The hull planking is not complete. If you saw others threads about Belem, the first impression is that the planking is more difficult than others ship. Maybe because this ship was appealing for newcomers like me. But, I think it is possible to obtain good result after filling and sanding (that what I saw on other builders pics). For my self, I am happy with bevelling result. Not too much space everywhere. I do not use the AL methods, especially for the length of plank used by plans.

So there where I am now. (Sorry for the english)

Michel

Hi,
Here is a small update for the hull of my Belem. The strips could be longer at stern and stem. I began the planking of the bottom part of the hull. Since I do not follow the AL way of planking, I do not know if the line for the transition between the upper part and the bottom part is correct. Most of the nails have been removed. I used a mix of Wood glue and CA depending of where I used it.

Have a good day.

Michel

Follow-up.

I made correction at stern and stem. Comment on errors made are welcome. This boat may be the one before the AL Bounty and I do not want to scrap this later one.

I really would like to know how people are able to made straight longitudinal cut for the plank ? Are they used band saw for this ?

After fiishing the planking, I will do sanding and further correction with decking plnks and filler. There is other pic.

Since I am not satisfied by the hull planking result, before the sanding step, I purchased some strips from Cornwal...

1- Cherry Strip 0.5 x 3mm x 1 Metre : I reduce by 1 mm the planking width for the floor.

2- Maple Strip 0.5 x 3mm x 1 Metre : to "polish" the side interior wall made from original plank strips (not the "ply" ones")

3- Beech Strip 0.6 x 5mm x 1 Metre : for the 2nd planking of the hull.

I began sanding. Will update soon since I am in between to working jobs (begin soon a new job in health field administration).

There is some sanding results. More to be done and filling thereafter. I had some difficulties with plank thickness... or may be about fairing or edge miscutting. Some people do large filler addition and had good result. But I want to try also 2nd planking there before painting in black. The learning curve of shipmodeling is long fo me since I have language barrier and take me long time to understand clearly what to be done.

I have one question : should I continue to post my work here since my skills are not too high ?
