Bluenose - Robertd [COMPLETED BUILD]

Unfortunately one Dory only , the other one just didn’t work out and couldn’t be salvaged , I changed the smokestack for the galley , the original way too tall so used ( the boom will go over it now) styrene tubing instead , working on the main cabin aft and other bits and pieces on deck, it is 3 months now since I started and the box is almost empty !still waiting for my blocks to start the rigging

Hi Robert,
The deck is becomming quite full. Nice to see it growing.
And yes, many parts are fragile. Be careful and, above all, take your time and do not rush/hurry.
Regards, Peter

Just received a copy Saga of the Great Fishing Schooners, also note the power supply to the windlass , not correctly shown on YQ instructions , I was able to rectify to the correct position without any hassles

One Dory , however there are heaps on the original , so not such a boo boo to only have one! Perhaps the others are in use LOL

Hi Robert,
It is corrrect, the engine box must be near by the windlass. And now you have noticed it yourself, it’s good you made the change. Otherwise, you always keep on looking at it with a ...... grrrrr ....
Beware of the (small) differences between the original BN and the BN-II in the Saga.
In dimension and position. Compaire this picture out off the ‘photo-thread’ with The Saga:
But The Saga gives a lot of information to understand more about the BN.
Keep on building!
Regards, Peter

I have seen pictures with up to 3 dories stacked on each other, and some with only one. So I wouldn't be too concerned with the amount.
At least you have one for reference, probably all I am going to use. ;)

Thanks Peter for your comments , yes there is a huge difference on deck between the BN-2 and the first one having built BN2 as well so I am aware of that and Saga identifies the differences as such , a great book , I just received it yesterday .

Engine box should be next to the windlass , I managed to do that yesterday

Finally started the rigging ! I just find it impossible to follow the guidelines in the instructions to secure the shrouds around the masts , instead using some thread to hold the ends together and a dollop of CA and roll between my fingers and cut off the excess thread , similar to the dead eyes and a pretty neat result I reckon

Robert, I owe you an apology. If I'd looked more closely at the SoS, I'd have come across the build-log of your BN-II.
It is also already on the BN-list by 'Other builds', but it was a bit of confusing as build by 'Hunter376'. I have changed the 'username' for the next BN-list to yours.
So, sorry I pointed you on the differences between both BN's.

Yes, it seems Robert will have an advantage on the BN rigging, having done it before! It is all new territory for me...lol :p

Thanks Dean, yes it certainly helps when done before must admit , however my result is far from perfect , to get the ropes easily through the little holes of your dead eyes or blocks first of all I dip all the ropes through beeswax rubbing one end with a bit of CA glue to stiffen it,

Started the rigging , the shroud ends on the belaying pins a bit of a challenge, spot the difference between the original and #2, some shrouds will have to be replaced , either too long or short , not such a big deal

The upper dead eyes should have been painted before adding the ropes between , I will try to paint them in place , if it doesn’t satisfy me I will redo the ropes again ,these things happen when excited, also the shrouds are not level to one another , my mistake , the correct way to have each one individually rigged , that’s what I did to my BN2

BN carried 8 dories when on the Grand Banks. I think that only one had to be aboard when racing. They did strip off the engine box, placed the anchors below deck as ballast, and a lot of other rigging was also removed, such as the running lights and some of the rat lines to reduce windage drag.
From what I am learning about the present BN II remake there are massive changes including a hydraulic steering system which I think is dangerous as hydraulics seem to fail under stress such as in a storm when you need a rudder the most. (Hydraulics problems observed over many years of ski patrol seeing problems with both the lift systems and snow grooming machines. . . visible fluid trails on the surface when we were opening runs in the morning.) Both the upper deck and lower compartmentation are little similar to the BN and actual first BNII replacement build.
Your YQ is looking very nice and will be a showpiece.

YQ kit may not include this but there was and should be a rod below the bottom ratline and just above the deadeyes which holds them in a straight line and parallel to the sheer or upper railing. You can see thin on the Stbd side of the main mast in Saga page 29 and several views on page 35.
That will help getting those in place if you want to glue and tie them in now. Just a thought. Rich (PT-2)
