Cazador Xebec - OcCre 1:60 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Today was a milestone. The cannons finally done!
View attachment 199164To ensure the ropes are the same length, I use this method. Pull ropes in front of cannon, put eyes on line, add glue above. Then fold rope on itself and glue.
View attachment 199165
then I tie thread around the rope, add glue and serve rope with thread.

Then I glue the eye to the bulkheads, and when dry, I lift cannon and add glue to wheels and place cannon. When that glue dries, I adjust the ropes.

Now for pictures of cannons in place. I still have to add eyes behind all of the cannons on the deck. Need to drill holes first.
However all the cannon assemblies are finished and in place! :)
I chose to leave them in this state, as if the rear pulley and ropes were unhooked for room to walk the deck. Mainly because I don’t have the amount of small pulleys it would take to rig all of that. Next war ship I will add. ;)
View attachment 199168View attachment 199169View attachment 199170Now I have to make all of the oars, next the anchors, and finally the ships boat. I’m looking forward to that! Already have ideas on embellishments for that!
You are moving forward in a great style that is impressive to see. You have me wondering what the oars will look like and how placed. Great work. Rich (PT-2)

Bravo Dean! The cannons are looking very smart on the deck. Congratulate everyone who worked in the armory these past several weeks!

Question:View attachment 199251
Is there a reason to have the gun under the deck to be so out of the hull ?
Yes, they gave me those false cannons and the instructions tell you to glue the piece of wood to mount them directly behind the opening! They should have been mounted deeper or cannons shorter. I already have some spare false cannons in the vice, ready to be cut off shorter. I will change out afterwards. I was not happy with what they gave me, too long and smaller dia...sigh! But I will fix it! ;)

Ok...out with the provided false cannon barrels, that were too small in diameter and way too long!
I took some spares I had from my last ship and cut them short and glued on and painted. Problem solved! ;)
Then I profiled the end of the bowsprit.
Looks like the oars are next...

Onto this build. First step was to set up shop and organize my tools and building supplies in cabinets and tool box. Then to unbox ship model and check contents. All is good so far.
So I decided the next step is to make a false keel clamp.
But looking at the plans I realized without the keel below the false keel in the first stages of the build, the bulkheads are almost to the bottom of the false keel. So no long blocks to clamp the false keel with. So I decide to use some angle brackets, that I ensured were square, and marked a line and screwed them down. Using the false keel as a guide to ensure they were between the bulkheads. Then I decided it would be easier to hold the keel perpendicular to the board by pushing it down flush and putting one small screw into it through the angle brackets. Hole will never be seen.
Next I checked to ensure the false keel was square with the board. Then I checked the length at the bottom for straightness. It had a slight bow in the middle. Double checked with the metal straight edge. So after verifying the bow, I put a screw and thumbnail to straighten it out. Problem solved all is square and ready to start on the bulkheads.
To keep the bow in the false keel from coming back after I unclamp to start planking the hull, I will use some additional blocks glued between the keel and bulkheads that tie everything together and will keep all square! Perhaps the decks will help, but I don’t want to take the chance of getting some kind of twist due to the keel trying to spring back at the bottom.
On to the bulkheads.

Nice toolbox. Where did you buy it from

Ok, I painted the bowsprit and added the gammoning. Then I took another liberty with my ship.
I kept looking at the keel sticking up at the bow, and it does nothing at all. And that bothered me, so I decided to add a gusset that would utilize the upper keel to help support the bowsprit, and at the same time attempt to make it look sleek.

so here it is sticking up above the railing with nothing attached to it.

Above I added the gusset...

above it is painted

Off to a distant shore to buy oars (from me, that I will build ;))...

Added nail holes, stained...then hit with steel wool to weather some. Overall pretty happy with it. Looks darker in pics for some reason?
And I installed the door I painted on the bulkhead. The door handle they give you us is a hoop on an eye (you have to put hoop on eye with tweezers). It’s all brass and I painted silver hinges...lol. Looks like I need to get some gold or copper paint. Will paint hinges and bolt heads to match.

I am real late to the party on your excellent build, but have a question for others. I have done the deck treenails like show, but was also told the planks in between the joint ends should also be nailed on line so you have line of nails across the width of deck. Could someone clarify for me please.

If you continue to read, someone eventually brought that point up. However I already knew that, but made a decision to only put them at the end of the boards. They would also be at the edges of the grates on the deck, the boards ended there too. But I used artistic license and decided i didn't want to clutter up my deck with that many nails. I may ad all of them on another build. So yes, they should be in a line, with the nails not on a plank end being staggered on each board. Hope that makes sense. I can show a pic if needed.

Hi Dean, I agree that gusset works wonders. There is almost something about a riflestock underneath a barrel to that picture - sleek! Thumbsup

You belongs to the list. (But isn’t everybody his own master, compared to his/her own skills?)
Regards, Peter
You are correct, Peter! We are all masters. If you think about that some people cannot even put nails in the wall (Seriously!!!????). We are building models! WOW!

Well I took some time off to take care of things around the house before the holidays. Today I started on the oars. I turned the ends and sanded the flats. Then I stained using some new water based stain. I painted the metal pieces that have to be glued on. Then I glued everything together.
Tomorrow I can put the eyes in the deck and rope them down in the stern.
Then I can start the anchors. After that it’s just the ships boat and I’m ready for masts, yards and rigging.
