Cazador Xebec - OcCre 1:60 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Well it seems me and these cannon and oar openings have become very familiar...sigh. I’m cutting out the lower half before planking the upper half. As I mentioned before, I find it easier this way because I always have an opening to start cutting with the xacto knife. Also I can start my cuts against the edge of the opening to help prevent splitting or chips. I do some light filing too, being careful not to undercut the corners. The corners I only use the knife to keep them sharp.
I counted 51 openings total, so after cutting out the inside planking and the outside, that is the equivalent of cutting out 102 openings. And this is a smaller ship!
Anyway...time to finish the rest of the planking in the ramin.
Oh and I realized I should probably paint the inside of the openings...very carefully! But should I go with black? OR maybe red?

Well...upper ship is planked. Everything cut out and trimmed.
Now to sand all these boards, or the entire side of the ship.
Then I can put a coat of clear on this side and add the whales. Then I will match the other side to this one.
I might as well paint inside the openings black too on this side. But I will clear coat first, that way if I get any black on the wood around the openings, then it will only be on the clear coat...and I can sand off and reapply the clear in that area. At least that’s the plan.
Here are some pics of my current progress...

Dear Dean62
you are doing excellent work, and the results are beautiful Thumbsup Thumbsup :)

@Dean62 This is one of the neatest and most precise builds I have seen in a long time. But then it is also clear from the surrounding areas that you are a meticulous person in general. I love the contrast in wood colour between the gunwales and the rest of the hull. The lines that the planks in the gunwales follow are so neat that they might just as well have been caulked. Keep on doing this and you will end up with a beauty!

Thank you very much for the compliments. It is always encouraging to know others appreciate and notice your efforts. I have a long history of model building and wood working. So building wooden ship models seemed like the perfect marriage of two interests! But as you know, a ships hull brings new challenges to any wood worker, I still have a lot of room for improvement there. And the rigging is an entirely different kind of challenge as well, working with tweezers and tiny blocks, etc. all the while trying to figure out where all those lines go! But as you know, it is a rewarding challenge. I have already ordered the San Felipe as my next ship. I still want to build the Norske Love again, I really like that ship and don’t know why it isn’t more popular?

Ok...it’s official... I have no self control when it comes to this ship!
I told myself I will just paint inside the cannon and oar openings black. And then sand off any extra paint and touch up the clear.
But I thought while I have the black out, I should just paint the upper bulwarks at the stern too.
Then I thought hey there is black in between the wales, better put those on. So I did the top one and then painted below it and put on the lower one.
Then I thought I might as well do the keel to see how that ties in...lol
Anyway I have to stop working on this side before I get too carried away. So now it’s time to do the second planking of the hull on the other side.
I noticed in the picture of the bow, that I have some touch up to do on the black. But I really have to stop for the night.
Pics below of current progress....

The one I saw in 1976 in Marseille was very colourful of course it was not in very good condition and did have a long past behind it but lots of blue, yellow, gold and red they probably try to hide the damage with paint but….. still lots of colour. Too bad I don’t have photo was wedding trip and well ship where not in my mind at the time.:D

Ok, I was going to take a night off...but I couldn’t resist painting something. So I did the casting for the back of the ship. I did some dry brushing and decided to add some color. Since it’s my ship, and I’m the captain, I decided to go with a metallic silver light blue as an accent color. I also added it to the shields and the flowers that go on the side. No they didn’t have that color in the 17th century...but I’m using artistic license!
I have included some process pics of the rear casting painting...and finally the changed side pieces to include the new color.
Also, on the cannon doors I decided not to paint them, but to use a veneer from the ships hull, that will tie them in.
Here is the pics from tonight’s work...

Most of the time it is the small detail that put apart a model
The eye work in special way and will most of the time attract to difference in pattern having paint so well the stern decoration it will be a focus point to the eye
Well done

Thank you, it was your mention of color that made me look for an opportunity to add a bright color somewhere.

Hello Dean,
I've just stumbled across your build, and must compliment you on your meticulous and clean work. Lovely ship, and you are making an excellent job of her!
