Bumblers Notebook: Round to Square"

Before I glue the deck/roof on the Boiler structure I need to build the Main mast. I've made several attempts at squaring what would be the bottom of a round dowel. But .......

8B910736-1DCE-499C-8085-ED54E5D81058_1_201_a.jpeg

The instructions call for a 6mm ( 1/4inch ) dowel, 154mm (6 1/4 inches) long. To keep up with the taper of the mast ( 6mm at the bottom and 4mm at the top) I've been experimenting with 10mm (3/8 inch) dowels. While the instruction call for a completely round tampered mast I like the look of a square bottom between the uprights. The space available is about 27+/- mm.

So SUGGESTIONS????

Hi Jan,
This is what the Alan Bates Cyclopedium shows. Perhaps it helps?

From the Main deck to the Boiler deck, you can make it square.
On the boilerdeck between the curved uprights octagonal.
And above that point, you make it round.
A stempiece is not needed because the mast is supported by the Boiler deck and the uprights.

Excellent information Peter. It never occurred to me to start with a square piece and trim it to shape. Just did not “Think” enough about that step.

@Peter Voogt

This is what I've been looking at and trying to replicate.

A freeze frame from the Chaperon 3D video.

You can see the "square" bottom of the mast. It appears to smoothly transition with a minor taper upwards to the round portion of the mast.

Aah ...... I forgot to look at the 3D video.
Perhaps square between Boiler and Hurricane. And on the Hurricane octagonal till the hight of the Texas?
And then round?
On my Lee I went also from square, to octa, to round.

@Peter Voogt ,

A test fit of the idea. The square part and a 4.5 mm dowel (easier to do in two pieces). Looks like the square bottom should end just below the arches. I did not see the octangular part on the 3d photo, but I definitely will try that.

Bumblers Notebook: Boiler deck update.

After unsuccessfully trying to find and order black sand paper to use on the Boiler deck (long story, availability, supply, in stock delays and shipping) I switched to plan "B", Flat black paint from a "rattle can". Numerous applications of paint between "000" steel wool sanding and I think have a result that I can live with.

You have achieved a beautiful finish on that boiler deck Jan! Thumbsup The degree of "coarseness: is obviously impossible to tell from the picture, but it looks extremely well-covered and uniform in color!

I'll take a better resolution picture in the morning. I've been getting beat up by Apple products today. My iMac crashed and the subsequent rebuild and reset of ID's was fun, it also affected my other Apple devices since every one them is on our WiFi and all of them share data and files.

Hi Jan. I don't think I can press the "Like" button. Isn't is strange how we just discussed electronic devices and then this happens. :(

Indeed, all it took was a mini power surge. Our commercial power was interrupted. It takes about 10 to 15 seconds for our home generator to come on line. From what I could discern the iMac was in the process of updating it's OS which it usually does automatically, (That process is now on manual mode), and the short delay between the generator coming on line and commercial power dropping was enough to crash the upgrade process. I have a 4 TB external hard drive connected to the iMac, its sole purpose is to act as mirror drive to the iMacs internal SST drive. So no data or files were lost and I could restore everything from the backup drive. Apple devices have the ability to share everything between devices such as iPhones, iMacs, iPads and Mac Pros, that neat ability caused all the extra recovery time today. What I create on one device shows on the others. Having spent years working in the Microsoft World and having Android phones I thought that was a neat feature . I switched from my I loved it "Blackberry" to an iPhone when my provider no longer supported 2G . I've restructured my setup now so my iPhone shares photos only with my Mac and iPad.

Sorry for the long tale, but I learned a good lesson today.

The Boiler Deck.

Heinrich, a better photo, the deck material is 1/16 inch plywood. the grain is odd and didn't seal as well as I wanted, but a few layers and sanding between layers seemed to do the trick.

That is a much better photo Jan - I think you can be very happy with how the deck turned out.

I also loved my Blackberry - the one with the trackball (even though the ball got stuck sometimes). I didn't like the next one which featured a scroll button as much. That original Blackberry (8820) was my best phone ever - I still think of it with fondness.

"Good morning Path, I ask: you needed the black sandpaper for the bridge for what purpose"

Hi,

The sandpaper was to simulate a roofing cover for the Hurricane deck. The plan was to cover the dove tail joints of the four pieces that fit together that make up that deck.

BEDA8930-C619-429D-9CFB-36D138E7080D_1_201_a.jpeg

Not a very good picture, but in the circle you can see the dovetail joints. The Main deck, Boiler deck and Hurricane deck are comprised of four pieces. I wanted to hide/cover the joints where they would be visible, so I planked the visible parts of the Main deck and Boiler deck to cover the joints.

I hope this answers your question.
