D805 Piet Hein, ex HMS Serapis, WW2 S class destroyer

The first print turned out pretty good, but I need to change the plate thickness from 0.7mm to 0.3mm. But that’s an easy chore, as Fusion allows you to go back in the timeline and adapt settings where required. Easy peasy.

Tip for anyone trying this: move the time symbol back to the spot you want to change. That way the recalculation is simply for that change. Keep the symbol at the end, and each little change results in a complete recalculation every time. Slow is an understatement.

You can see that the plates are too accentuated.

I revisited the deckhouses and bridge as well. Earlier prints showed flaws in my thinking and I really want to get this right.

A tough part to design was the front and rear blast deflectors. Curved in one direction, angled in another, good training with Fusion :) . And of course I wanted the breaks to make things fit on my print bed at logical places.

I'm sure the prints will turn out well, as I kept within my 3D printing comfort zone of 0.5mm. And if not, Ill be back.

After having to stay out of my work shed for three weeks, I finally am of drops and eyes start to be back on track (if not already better than the old ones :cool:).I started the resin printer on the deckhouses and some of it goes well, some of it not so. It is always a bit of a hassle to find the correct angle and positioning on the print bed. But I am getting there. You see the rear of the bridge deckhouse in my hand. Lots of angles and some really thin plating.

The other thing I worked on was the hull. And boy does she look beautiful! Finally the lines and curves that I wanted. And yes, she's biggish. And will require some sanding and filling to make it to the expected standard.

Your deckhouse is thin indeed; see-through plastic. Very precise printing, by the looks of it.
The hull is long and slender; does this require a move to a larger house?

Marco she is looking great. I am tempted to ask you a price for a hull and deck and have a crack at building a wartime HMS Serapis. I dont think the hull was altered after the change over, but you would know that better than me.
Already waiting for your next installment.

D805 is more or less HMS Serapis anyway, as I am following the 1945-1946 lay out. Early ‘50’s they did some changes, amongst others a helo deck (which was only used in some trials).

I’ll pm you about that hull.
 
Well, I’m making some progress, albeit slowly. I had to print and re-print almost everything, as there was always something wrong. But now I’m at “sanding and filling level”.

What originally was one piece was now printed in six segments, of which one in resin and five in filament. I was constantly struggling with flat sections vs supports leaving marks I could never sand to acceptable levels. But I’m getting there.

Tuesday will be X-mas as my Proxxon delta sander arrives.

And all this just as a baseline to add detail to.

Hmmm.

The fun thing is that I’m learning every day. At first i thought the fdm printer was only for the hull. Now i’m finding it can actually print really small details, like door handles. Wow.

And for our next trick ... the lattice mast. I want to try my hand printing it, but probably will have to revert to good old soldering.
Here's a first draft, but boy, it is really hard to see the details in the few pictures of this ship. And I will have to cheat a little, as L profile 3D printed at this scale will be too flimsy.

Oh well, we will see.

I did a test print and that went well, so on to the next iteration. You see the lattice mast with the platforms and for show I drafted in the top mast and spar. But I'm sure I will do those in brass rod or so. I had to cheat a little to create brackets to hold those rods later on, but I'm sure nobody will notice once the ship is finished. And to keep things sturdy enough, I designed the lattice to square 1.25mm.

She starts to look like a destroyer … about time to start sanding, repairing (not a lot to do), prime coating and bonding parts to the deck.

So I’m back where I was a couple of months ago. But really happy I made that decision to start over.
