Endurance (1912) - Occre, Scale 1:70 - My First Shipbuilding Adventure

Following on from a lengthy gap, brought on by;
a) - A mother of all viruses
b) - Family Christmas / New Year celebrations
c) - Lethargy
I have managed to catch the odd hour here and there on the Endurance, added the rub-rails, prop, rudder, and fitted out the Bow deck with most items.
Still reluctant to permanently fix the centre cabin until I'm absolutely positive it's not going to cause issues or be in the way of other stuff.
We watched a new Netflix (2023) doco on Shackleton, and I got a glimpse of the rear companionway and its door posts which has been
bugging me for ages so I'll get to fit that now. Thumbsup
I've set a goal to be starting to prepare the masts by the end of January / mid-Feb.
I think that's a do-able target, only need to fit some tiny wooden blocks, a few hatches, the kennels, stanchions and other
little fancy-schmancies - should be a doddle. ;):p
I'll add a few comments towards the end of the month and with a bit of luck should be void of self-inflicted expletives ROTF

Good morning. Coming together very nicely. Cheers Grant

lengthy gap

I think that’s the first daylight photo since November. Your Endurance looks very tidy now, no dust, cobwebs or tumbleweed. :D

I see you’ve done quite a lot of work since then. And thinking of getting the masts in already? Compared to many first builds you are rocketing along, virus or not. Well done!

One thing, have you accidentally left a salt pot on the forecastle behind the catheads? ROTF

Sounds right up my alley mate, definitely will have a hunt for that one Hulk Thumbsup

Found it - $750 AUD ?? ......... I might pass :p ROTF

Look for it on second hand book websites, not Amazon. There are lots available all over the world at around £20.

for example, https://www.betterworldbooks.com - £23.09 free postage to Australia from USA

(People list stuff on Amazon at crazy prices just in case some mug comes along to that most well known site and thinks they have found a valuable rarity.)

Found one mate, but not 23 knicker, try $45 US :p
Ordered it anyway as I've looked as best as I could and come to the conclusion it's not that readily available so figured go for it.
That's about $70 AUD which is far better than the $750 from Ama-con.

Thanks for the heads up Smithy mate ThumbsupThumbsup;)

Finally managed to get that companionway fitted with the doors on.
I think I mentioned previous I had much deliberation in deciding what to do about the door mounts.
Well, while watching a doco there was a brief shot of those doors with just enough time for me to see they were not painted at all.
Happy Daze.
Also making progress with the dog kennels, (not glued yet) just need to add some varnish but going for eggshell or matt, I don't think a polished surface goes with dog kennels.

Looking at those photos I may have done a whoopsie. Frank Spencer - 1973 ~ 78
Those kennels should be a darker stain :p;)

Easy fix Thumbsup:) The Ships Cat - Jan 2025

I like the tiny hinges on the companionway doors. Very smart. In fact the entire thing looks amazingly neat and tidy. The lighting did come out well despite all the leakage problems you had (something that comes with age ROTF ).

Well, I've designed many jigs in my career but never one this minisculeROTF
The steps leading to upper decks are all laser cut, so removing and de-burring is taking a while but the assembly has been doing laps in my head for weeks.
How do you make sure a tread with just a tiny cut-out fits into a slot 1mm wide and 1mm deep and remains square enough to look half decent when fitted?
I tried self-clamping tweezers in and out of my vice, I tried the stringer flat on the mat and offer the tread up to it plus many other new swear word discoveries.
Then I thought, yeah, maybe, worth a shot, why not, nothing ventured twice shy as they say.
A few icy-pole sticks glued as a base, glue a few 1mm x 3mm runners spaced by the treads, couple of stiffeners each side, et voila !
Works a treat :pThumbsup
I'm using my little jig to attach enough treads to keep square then I'll add the remaining when all is set well and good;)

So did you weld the ladder together then?
I considered it an option during the latter stages of convulsive frustration, but I concluded if the jig didn't work I'll just drop ropes
from the deck and the crew can climb up like Batman.

Don't drop a tread on the floor, don't drop a tread on the floor, don't drop..........
Guess what........I dropped a tread on the garage floor and can't find it

2 options.
a) Omit one of the 2-tread steps on the rear deck (does it need 2?)

b) Make a new tread from the copper sheet.

I'll keep you posted on that one.
