Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Good morning.
Not much to report just making some more cannon carriages, wheels etc…. o_O .

I did clean up the hawes holes. I am debating to paint these black or a lead colour. A little nervous not to mess up here tho.

Darn, even on your macro pictures she looks b....y good, so jealous...
Don't think the color you use, either black or lead grey, won't make much of a difference, especially if you plan on having the anchor cables routed through the haws holes; it'll be a massive black hole anyways. ;)

Good morning Johan. Thanks. Cheers Grant

Good morning. Ricochet Rabbit….I ran out of blocks for my cannons so waiting……they are at customs.

My dabbling:
Nothing glued - dry fitted:
1. Made a small chime ball, rope and cross piece for the bell tower - my fun additions. When I abuse my cotton ropes they fray a little- tying the knots did abuse it a little.
2. Finished the main deck cleat

Making tiny belay pins. I used my mini lathe and reduced the size of pins from the kit (the Cazador does not have these pins) for the foremast rigging. A little inconsistent and are still too big. I don’t know if I can make them smaller but will have to somehow…….on the Le Requin and Peters they are metal however I don’t have such parts so…….cost of courier fees and decline of the SA Rand has made getting parts here exorbitant.

Cut the frames for the boat and placed them on the jig/board. I rather like Occre’s boat although some inaccuracy at the stern. I’m inclined to build this as the kit suggests.

Fun break from cannons.
Cheers Grant

Quite some variation in your update; Grant is progressing rather nicely!
As for your belaying pins, yes they seem a bit oversized to me as well. It's something I also have observed on other kits (which included the belaying pins), especially the wooden ones. Too bad the cost of purchasing the metal ones overseas is so high...
Your boat looks rather robust, which is a good thing, especially when looking back to my efforts at the extremely thin an vulnerable parts I had at my disposal.

I used a 2B lead pencil to simulate the lead colour in hawse holes. Just expose more lead to reach further into the hawse. A lot more local control and less risk of splattering paint.

Good morning Johan. Sometimes I run out of ideas to make some “McGyverisms” so I’m going to have to be very gentle and try reduce them more. They do take a 0.6mm rope so not too much or it will look silly when I tie the falls.

Good morning Roger. This is a good idea. My anchor cables are light in colour and I would worry about the pencil discolouring them when I pull these through. Maybe seal it with some poly first? Cheers Grant

Good morning Grant, I had not run my anchor cable through the hawse pipes/holes after colouring them with the lead pencil. I have not sealed the hawse either.

So to test I took a piece of light tan right hand lay 0.08” line that I had in my parts box. This is larger than the 0.062” cable lay that I intend to use for my anchors. I ran the larger line through a hawse twice and see no discolouration on the line. I guess potential discolouration is dependent on the type of lead (graphite) pencil though.

Hello, gentlemen! Hello Grant! What a magnificent and beautiful ship you have created.. Amazing.. And not only the ship, the build log is also very interesting and useful. I am very worried about you and your Cazador. Or you can also say that I watch the assembly very carefully. Very interesting! Looking forward to the continuation about Cazador!! Egor.

This a project for you, Egor, to take your mind of things?

Good afternoon Roger. Thanks for this and it is most definitely worth a test. Cheers Grant

Ouch, my notification does not work and miss a lot o fpage of progress. Indeed, GREAT work has been done since my last visit in your thread. Congrat.
Good morning. Thank you for having a look see at my build and the compliment.

Good morning Egor. Thank you for looking in at my build and for the compliment. I worry about myself sometimes ;). It has been a lot of fun changing up this kit and “doing my own thing”. Thanks again it is much appreciated.
Looking good Grant. Love the term “McGyverisms” - feel that’s one of my super powers (the other being able to nap just about anywhere/anytime).
Good morning Hugh. Yep, I have to do with what little I have here, so this McGyverisms are frequent and essential ROTF. My napping ability is poor tho, need to learn that skill;).
Cheers Grant

Good morning. Very little progress on my Xebec. Rugby World Cup fever and business travel has eaten into my build time.

I have no more precut wood for my ships boat left. Luckily I had some 5x2 lime planks left over from the Victory so I have been cutting these down to a 3x1 for the boats planks:

The good news for me is SA beat France 29- 28 in the quarter finals. An epic match where France outplayed us but we physically bullied and capitalised on a few errors by France to win by 1 point.:DBeerExplosion. I feel for Gilbert and the French though. Cheers Grant

Hi Grant,
always nice to see what you get out of the kit. Since I love this type of ship anyway, it excites me all the more. When La Palme and Le Rochefort are finished, I will tackle something similar, I already have the monograph.
Good afternoon Tobias. Thank you. Yes, you would build an incredible POF Le Requin( just guessing you going for this). Cheers Grant
