HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Congratulations Jan! I am so glad to see that your Christmas Gift has arrived. And this time the timing is good - you don't have to wait long! As to it becoming part of your estate - not a chance! You, Ron and I (for now) have a WB to build!

It arrived safely....Yes I did peek inside to smell the wood (and pull out the instructions)

Heinrich, are you interested in starting a cottage industry? Just give us your mailing address and we'll send you our framed-up hulls and you can plank them. :D
Just kidding of course as I/we wouldn't want to miss out on all the fun you are having with yours. (Then again, hummm)

Ron

Great looking planks and the natural curves the beautiful lady has.
Thank you for the kind words Kurt! I am also impressed by the lines of the ship - compared to the Batavia with her much blunter bow and slightly slab-sided look, the Willem Barentsz is MUCH more curvy - I really like how the is bulbous midships section tapers to form a delicately-shaped bow and stern.

ROTF Heinrich I think you have put fear and trepidation into those who Have bought the WB. Your planking is coming great.
Hi Grant. Oh my word, that was not my my intention! ROTF Seriously though, it is challenging BUT I can also tell you that it is my most enjoyable build SO FAR. I say so far, because there is still one step left that fills me with trepidation! Fear - NEVER! You know we South Africans have no such word in our dictionary.ROTF

So let me show you what happened today so far.

The fifth plank on starboard

View attachment 275487 has been tapered, and glued. As you can see I use every conceivable space on the ship to clamp and pin the plank.

The fifth plank on starboard has been laid.

Here you can see the uneven number of planks clearly. Five on starboard, four on port side. Now it's time for the fifth on Port Side to be glued, laid down and clamped.
Just my first visit peeking into your log. You have excellent alignment of the strakes on both sides. That is a challenge that you have met very well. Looks like it will be a fun ship to model. I'll tag along from the peanut gallery row. Rich (PT-2)

@PT-2 A big and hearty welcome Rich! I am having a lot of "fun" at the moment and I am really enjoying the build! Thank you for the nice comments! Thumbsup

Most definitely not a build for the faint hearted.
You're right, you wouldn't have "fear" in your SA dictionary; that would be "angst" or "ancst"...

@RDN1954 Hi Johan. It is not an overly difficult ship to plank - you just need to exercise care and focus on what you are doing. Our archetypal South African Afrikaner is a fictional character with the name of Koos van der Merwe (very much along the lines of Chuck Norris). He is not the sharpest pencil in the case, but through his bravery he achieves a lot! Rather than fear, we believe in "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread".ROTF

Checked in too late here...

Just to see if there are any pictures between the others, mouth cap on
Nice story you told here
