HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Dear Friends

The new academic semester started with me being promoted to Head of English. Obviously, this brings with it added responsibility and a heavier workload, but in lieu of me trying to obtain a very rare work permit extension in China, it may just be a good thing. In any case, last night the English department went out for dinner, so I thought I would share a picture with you of my work colleagues. I was very chuffed that the admiral could join us (she is seated next to me).

Thank you for the very kind words, my friend. I am very happy if you enjoy the research - it is something that is very important to me, and I will not give up until I have an answer with which I am happy. :)

Hi Heinrich,
I cannot really add to what others have said but I am very happy to hear this news and hopefully you can stay where you want to be.

Cheers,
Stephen.

I wish I was in Cape Town this morning as the Mother City marks the final destination of the Second Leg of the 2023 Ocean Race. At the moment the first four IMOCA 60 yachts are approximately 120 nautical miles from Cape Town and these Formula One machines of the sea are approaching the finishing line at speeds of 25 knots. The first four boats are within10 nautical miles of one another after 16 days of racing, so the table is set for a final, white-knuckled run to the line. The IMOCA 60 represents the pinnacle of yacht design and technology - the world speed record of these foiling boats currently stands at an incredible 38.5 knots!

Team Malizia (Germany) is currently holding a slender 8.9 nautical mile-lead. Note the foil on the starboard side (out of the water) while the port side foil is dug into the water providing the boat with extra buoyancy/stability.

Hi Heinrich,

These foil yachts are quite incredible to watch, it is a real balancing act they do and sometimes don't do so well.

Cheers,
Stephen.

Indeed Stephen. Apparently, the fastest speed is obtained when the boat's hull just skims the water. The spectacular photographs where the one foil is completely out of the water and the boat is progressing at an obtuse angle, may look spectacular but is not the fastest. What I find incredible is that after 17 days of sailing, the first four boats are separated by only 6.7 nautical miles. The Capetonians are in for a grandstand finish!

I can only marvel at the admiral when it comes to the rigging. She does this while watching a movie on her mobile phone. :) Next week, she will do the rigging above the mast tops and then it's time for me to start on the yards.

O yeas, doing ratlines is so boring ….. or a bad movie is inspiring to do ratlines …… ;)
It’s looking great, Heinrich.

Brilliant technology, those hydrofoils.

Now it's really starting to look like a ship and she is beautiful, much admiration for your work.

Also congratulations on your promotion, well done and thoroughly deserved no doubt.
