HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

You’re fortunate to have him for a few days. Dogs can be great companions (Sorry Anna) :)
Just don’t get too attached……
Ron, fully agreed. I grew up with dogs and had never been without either a cat or dog/s or both in my adult life. Now that i am in China it is the first time that I am without any animal. Matt (my colleague) and I rescued this little one as a puppy from a busy street. He was clearly abandoned, mangy and starving. Matt took him in and I have been his godfather ever since.

You may concider yourself Lucky to have for a fewdays.
Man's best friend afterall. :) :)
Peter, I can assure you that HE is the Lucky one - with me he will be spoilt rotten. I have already bought him his special food bowl on a little stand so that he doesn't have to bend too far down, I have bought him imported food from New Zealand (grain free), dried chicken neck snacks and two toys. We have just returned from our nocturnal walk so now the fella is lying next to me huffing and puffing! :D

That is what I called a very nice single layed well lined solid oak planked hull. I can give the line more adjectives, but ………..just lovely :)
Regards, Peter
Thank you so much Peter. Coming from someone with such an excellent detail for lines and detail and with your amount of artistic flair, I really appreciate the comment.

Hello Everyone

Yesterday I mentioned to Grant that this version will be painted below the waterline as per @Ab Hoving Ab's model.

Whilst I have not painted WB #1, I decided to do it here on the basis of historical accuracy.

On the Batavia, I first applied a Danish-manufactured water-based primer (from Flugger) which turned out to cover the wood so well and look so good, that I decided not to paint over it, but to keep it as the final coat.

The Flugger primer has, however, now moved on to greener pastures and I can't seem to find it anymore in China. @Kolderstok Hans has sent me two bottles of the Kolderstok white, called "Harpuis" and if you want to know how accurate that is, just look here.

In his specification list of preparing De Zwane and the Griffioen for the 1595 expedition, Pieter Reygersburgh, the ammunition and equipment master has listed 550 ponden "arpeuys" which is the old spelling of "Harpuis".

The Kolderstok Harpuis which is a water-based, chalk paint. Therefore, from a point of being historically correct, I could not do any better - in fact it is quite amazing and is clear proof - once more - of the length that Hans goes to, to ensure that everything is spot on.

Subsequently, I have prepared a few pieces of scrap wood glued together which have been sanded, a coat of shellac applied and sanded again.

And here is the same piece of wood, but with two coats of the Harpuis paint applied.

My concern here is that the paint is very thin and does not seem to cover well. I am also worried that two bottles may not be enough. Maybe it is still a good idea to apply a white primer first, over which I can then apply the Harpuis paint. The problem that I have in China though, is that I have no idea what the product is like until I have bought it and used it - a bit like sailing in unchartered waters.

What do the expert painters among you guys think?

Well I'm no expert painter, nor am I an expert on what this white/yellow coating would have looked like in real life - but I can share that I rather like the partial coverage in your sample. It has an authenticity feel to it that a solid white might lack???

Can anything look better than this from Ab?

Thank you, Paul. I wholeheartedly agree - the finish that Ab manages to obtain on his models is in another league. So, one vote to use the Harpuis as is. Thumbsup
