Hms Alert by Maarten [COMPLETED BUILD]

The SB side is coated with a layer of shellack.



Work for the new stand starts.
I roughly cut out the shape of the ships keel from a piece of plywood and made a new base of solid oak.


With double sided tape I fixed my hull against the plywood.



And from the other side.


Fitted a fwd and aft bulkhead.

Oh I guess what's coming. Color, middle construction, a frame piece on the right and left. At the front a paragraph space for a disc. And if I had to guess I would say that you fill it with resin -> let it water. I am really curious. Great job.

Thx for your comment.
The ring is 0,7 mm or 35 mm to scale, which I took from measurement from the aots book.
I can take a reference measurement from the anchor in my garden.

Boom Boom! Like we all have an anchor in our garden to take measurements off. I love it.

In the meantime I have made the anchor buoy.
This was used so the crew could see the location of the anchor while in the water.

The buoy is like a pointed wooden barrel.


I make it from my own pear which I lumbered 2 years ago. First turn it in the lathe to 14mm diameter.



One side is made connical with a chisel.



Then the otherside being carefull not to make it too thin so it will break. Finally sand it.


After sanding I cut of the buoy.


No I clamp it in the vice using some foam not to damage it. I saw in the pattern of the planks with a japanese saw.


Planks finished.


Color it with bitumen. And add the rings made of heat shrink.


Now the rope work. I make splices on the end of the rope by twisting with CA.


4 nooses to fit around the buoy.


Two nooses are looped and tight together. A rope pulled through the splices.


Now 2 of these sets are tight to both sides of the buoy.


Finally fit it to the anchor.


Finished.

Beautiful work once again.

My take on that positioning of the buoy rigging is that it is also designed to help release the anchor flukes for recovering an anchor which has been cut off to allow a quick escape from attack. Once the danger is over the ship can return and haul up the buoy rigging, recovering the anchor without having to sweep for it.

I stand ready to be corrected by more seasoned sailors....

Only a short comment - sorry - but once more Uwe

The rope between the anchor and the buoy should be much longer.
Imagine in a water depth of 20 or 30 meter - in scale 1:48 every 10 meter are already 20cm of rope.
Usually this length of this rope is fixed as a coil at the shrouds

Maarten - you are just incredible! I do NOT like British ships - the one exception is HMS Speedy, but that is more because of Cochrane's career than anything else. But you have me following your Royal Caroline build religiously and now Alert as well. That is the true sign of a great builder! Congratulations on everything you have accomplished so far and will still accomplish in future.

Yes, she will be shown just before hauling her anchor.

I have measured the anchor in my garden and the result is, you are right
My anchor is 2,4 mtr high with an anchor ring of 4 cm. The alert has an anchor of 7,5 cm or to scale 3,6 mtr, the ring should then be 6 cm or in 1:48 1,2 mm.
My ring measured from the AOTS drawings was 0,7. I will replace it.
