Hms Alert by Maarten [COMPLETED BUILD]

Next is more doors .
Working on the second bulkhead and the PS and SB cabins.

First I dry fit the bulkheads, some alterations are neede to get a proper fit.


For the doors in the cabins and the bulkhead I make proper door frames.



Aswell as the door frames also the doors get a rebate to properly close. On top the kit provided door.


Dry fitting the door.


Hinges are made and fitted.



And the doors hanged into their hinges.



Again dry fitting to see if the doors properly open and close.



The bulkhead and cabin walls are fitted together.
I have burned in the nail heads.


The PS cabin gets a light blue color based on the color scheme of hms victory.

Work on the cabin to be finished hopefully this Sunday.

The above cabin was the masters cabin. The master was responsible for sailing the ship and was directed by the captain. He was the second highest ranking officer onboard hms Alert and had his own cabin.
As officer he had a bed instead of a hammock and I used this hms victory officers bed as an example.


To start I used a kit provided door and covered it with cloth. Fold the edges and glue them on the inside.


Same for the head and foot end.


Turn it around and repeat the same trick with a bigger piece of cloth.


Through the folded sides of the cloth I feed a piece of thread.


Glue together the corners with CA to create the bed shape.


Cut of the ends.


Do the same on the other side and trim the thread to the proper lenght to hang the bed at the correct height in the cabin.


Make a blanket and a pillow to make the bed.


I put a light wash on the bed to make it off white.
Also I made two wooden rods, one in front and one at the end of the bed.


The masters bed is finished for the cabin.


The master also brought his own seamans chest with his personal belongings. As example I took and 18th century seamans chest.



This I made from solid pear wood. First I turned a piece of pear to the correct diameter and cut it to the right length.


From this I sanded down the sides and bottom to get the proper shape.


With the japanese saw I saw the shape of the planks into the chest.


From 0,35 mm anealed wire I hammered all the iron work.


Finally ageing with turpetine dilluted bitumen.


Now for the lobby I made a painting of Alert and framed it.


Both chest and painting are situated in the masters lobby.

Not to much progress lately due to other obligations.
First of all I am awaiting my fantastic 28 pieces chisel set that Mikhail made for me. I ordered ot late November and he made it last week and send it to me last Saturday. So somewhere between Moskow and Netherlands my micro chisel set is on its way.

I will make a brief review when I receive it.

Ok back to alert. Again more doors, the captains day room, captains bedroom PS, captains store room SB and in the stern the bread room.
And all these bulkheads need doors, panel doors in this case so the proxxon mill is making some running hours again.
The door of the bread room is in the plans opening to the stern, actually that cant be right as the rising profile of the hull behind the door will block it and it will open just a little bit in that direction before ot gets stucked. So my door will open into the captains day room.


Again the hinges and door knobs made and fitted.


All three bulkheads finished.


I glued together the bulkheads to make an easy installment when the interior decoration of the cabins is done.
Doors are tested according rigorous Ikea test protocols.


The interior wall again painted in the light blue colour. And the door frame finished.


Followed by dry fitting.



Next time the interior for these cabins.

Those hinges are mad. I know I'm repeating myself. But they are just so great, but tiny and therefore fitting in scale that it's just crazy. And scale doorframes

Just thought - OH, congratulations - it is a boy! the sleeping room walls are painted in blue colour -> nice idea

But congratulations for your new chisel set - I have the same, like some other members, you will love them
To all others - this set from Michael is very special and not comparable to other minichisels - much better, much sharper and much smaller......

Ok @Uwek , the boys room needs decoration .
This cabin is the captains bedroom so it will be a little more fancy then the masters cabin.

First this cabin gets a wall cupboard for his fancy clothing.
I make this of some scrab wood and some walnut veneer.



From the walnut I cut a door and three drawers and glue them on the cherry background.


Then I mill very fine lines through the walnut so get get a two tone wood inlay look to the cupboard door and drawers.


Now I sand the veneer back to a very thin layer, add two hinges to the door and knobs to the door and drawers.


Make a freeze on the top and put a layer of shellack before dry fitting in place.


Now the captain needs a bed. Slightly more fancy. Same procedure as for the master, but now with finer cloth.


For his bed his lovely wife made him some embroidered silk blankets. These I actually made with paint pens.


The bed was inspired by Nelsons bed on Vistory.


Finally the cabin is decorated. Next time furniture for the captains dayroom.
