HMS Victory 1:72 - Caldercraft by Gilbertm

Hello friends
After a couple of weeks of work, I am making steady progress on the hull second planking..
I believe I am approximately half way thru.
Caldercraft documentation recommends to use medium CA to glue the walnut planks. I did not like that approach too much as it tends to leave dark spots on the planks. I used wood white glue instead (Weld bond glue).
Below some pictures of the hull as it stands today.

Some thourough sanding is needed but I'll work on that a bit later.

In parallel I have adjusted the height and width of the cannon ports in order to match with the Caldercraft plan. Still some work to be done here but I'll be completing this at the same time as I complete the second planking.

Cheers
You can be proud of your work on this one. The site can always use another beautiful Victory.
Happy modeling
Ted

Hello Gilbert,
You’ve made good progress. But I also see that you have ended some planks in the middle of the hull with a zero width. That’s not the intention with this type of ship. The minimum width at the end of a plank should be half a plank’s width. In this case, you need to work with stealers. Have a look at my Dutch build log: https://www.modelbouwforum.nl/threads/hms-victory-van-caldercraft-door-wil.281364/page-7 or my log on SOS: https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/threads/hms-victory-of-caldercraft-by-wil.16072/page-2

Are you going to copper the entire hull? If that’s your plan, then this deviation isn’t a big problem, because you won’t see any of it later.

Hello friends
Progress on my Victory has been quite slow during the last few weeks due to unexpected events.
I have had some cardiac issues at the beginning of July and ended up spending a little over a week at the hospital.
Things are moving now in the right direction and I have resumed the second walnut planking.

Below picture of the hull after completing the second planking and before any sanding

And now after sanding both sides of the hull.
I adjusted the size of the gunports at the same time.

I then applied a coat of wood sealer (Fondur in French). 1 or 2 additional coats will be required.

I have to say that I am quite happy with the way the hull looks.
I can now move to the upper gun deck

Cheers

Hello Gilbert,
Good to hear that you are doing better again. I myself have experienced such a period and know from experience what this can mean for you. I wish you much success with your further rehabilitation.

Your second planking looks very nice, especially after sanding. Touching up the seams below the waterline would not necessarily have been needed, because copper will go over them. But of course, it doesn’t hurt.

An important tip: definitely do not paint or do anything else where the copper will go. In addition, I want to draw your attention to attaching the copper plates with double-sided adhesive tape. With me, not a single one has fallen off even after more than a year. When I read all the stories of what builders experience with gluing, I do not understand why double-sided adhesive tape is no longer used. If you want to know more about this, send me a personal message.
