HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Brilliant Grant! Swear jar full - roger that...
Good morning Paul. Thank you very much. With my non skilled tweezers and “no finesse” methods, to get the lines tied off and not damaged those already tied off fulls my swear jar for sure ROTF . We have kissed and made up tho….for the time being. Cheers Grant

I honestly don't know where you guys get the energy to swear after a boo-boo. I barely have enough zest left to sigh despondently! ROTF
Good morning Heinrich. Generally my disagreements with Grants Victory occur while attempting to do something in an almost inaccessible space. The boo-boo comes after and then it is a despondent do- over sigh;). Cheers Grant

If I would be daring enough to start a build like the Victory, a single swear jar wouldn't have sufficed and the possibility of the model ending on a dumpster would be rather high.
Hats off for your perseverance!
Good morning Johan. Thanks. Yep my jars are full and still plenty more fights to come I am sure. It is getting difficult (well for me) now as the space to work diminishes as each line is put on. Fun times ahead for sureThumbsup. Cheers Grant

Good morning. This morning I decided to take a break from rigging and play some more with the ships boats. I have been working on this for a couple of months off and on.

Here is how I modified the Mantua barge to make it look a little more authentic- well Grants Victory authentic :D.

Mantua plans :

I am going to attempt something like this:

I used the Mantua keel and “bulkheads” so the shape and scale is correct.
Planked with 0.5mm walnut and then cut away the “bulkheads” and sanded as thin as I could. As I am painting this I only used CA glue.

To create ribs I cut 0.5mm cardboard into 1mm strips and “ ribbed” the inside.

Cut the deck shape from a piece of paper and planked it.

Checked the fit into boat:

Used 2x2mm birch for the gunwale and filed the oar positions with a needle file. Painted Moss green and white.

I have no more wood other than scraps left. I cut down a 6mm walnut to 4mm and inserted the thwarts.

I will place the Launch and the barge on the ship, (as in photo) while the Pinnace and cutter will hang from the Davits.

Still loads to do to Finnish these. Was fun to cut wood again.
Cheers Grant

Very good indeed.
Well done sir.

Love that greean and white - old Rhodesian rugby team colors!
Good morning Heinrich. That was a long time ago ROTF. It is interesting to note that the 4 boats on the Victory had different colours and patterns depending on the time period during its life time. I have painted my boats similar to the current Portsmouth Victory. Cheers Grant

I just re-read your last few pages Grant. That rigging looks amazing, which I see you have now “sworn off“ for a while. You have done a wonderful job of those little boats with some very original construction.
Good morning Roger. I have to get creative as I am resource limited down here- have to make do with what I have. Fun tho and I am happy. Loads of details to add on the boats:D Cheers Grant
