HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

What a great sight she is Grant. Lovely company, a man needs his buddies to blow off steam so to say! Your Vic looks great in front of that picture, just great.
Hope you enjoyed the "braai" :)

Grant, your Victory is looking superb! I have been snowed under with work for weeks on end now that I struggle to find any spare time for my Fly, let alone keep up with all the build logs. But I thought I'd better check in on Grant's Victory as it might be near completion, which is appears to be. Is it? I really like where you have anchored her as well, particularly with that dramatic-sky picture in the background. I can already imagine how many times you'll be walking past your model in the future, pausing to double check that a line hasn't come loose or a belaying pin dislodged, but mostly I suspect you will be stopping to look and remember what a terrific ship-modelling journey it has been. Seriously well done bruThumbsup
Good morning Mark. Thank you. Unfortuantely she is not yet complete. Getting close tho. Waiting on some more 2mm wood and new main entrance ways. (I am redoing these). Another unfortunate thing is that it a temporary berth for her. My buddy is making a display case and her final resting place will be in my pub. The Admiral has let me use the lounge for a while as while working on my Xebec there is a lot of dust etc.
Cheers Grant

Hello Peter. Thanks. Yes a fabulous typical SA braai was had. I do like the Vic infront of the pic, sadly it is temporary tho.

Cheers Grant

Good morning. I have almost finished this Pinnace in the launch position. I don’t know where to tie off the falls for the tackle tho.

When these boats are launched from the quarter Davits there are two ways they do so.
- for the smaller lighter boats (like the Pinnace) they crew lower the boat from the boat itself.
- for larger heavier boats these are usually launched from the main deck via the complex tackle system as portrait in my Barge being raised. If from the quarter Davits the crew on the quarter deck, often via a block system, lower the boat.

I attempted to have the falls going back to the Pinnace however at this scale did not work. I have temporarily run them under the netting but have no idea where to tie them off.

What is that in the hammock netting?

Good morning. The look I went for was the Hammocks with the canvas cover over them. I personally did not like the individual hammocks stacked in the netting look. See pages 97 and 98 on my Hammock discussion and dilemma. On page 101 post #2006 I made the decision to give them the canvas cover appearance. Cheers Grant

Even if not all modeling materials are available in your country, you are blessed with your family, friends and a special talent of ship modeling.

I wish you a great birthday and will toast you tonight. Beer

Good afternoon. I was so excited this morning when my parts to finish my Victory arrived. I ordered these in January so it was with great anticipation that I opened the box….and then….only one main entrance not 2. Speechless:rolleyes:. Hmmm these things happen…right? I was looking forward to wrapping her up. Non the less I have decided to add the starboard side and finish off some of the rigging non the less. She deserves to be done. I will do what I can this weekend. Cheers Grant

A mistake of the company you ordered from or lost during shipment? Frustrating non the less! :(
It is a tad. Peter it was actually the order that went wrong. They made an error in the packing. Anyway I will do what I can and finish all the little things I have been procrastinating about. I’m looking forward to play with my Victory again. Cheers Grant

Can anyone provide me with the dimensions of the HMS VICTORY'S pumps? I am building the Corel cross-section model which doesen't even address them at all. This model is totally inaccurate and I am having to build a lot of missing items from scratch. Longridge and McCay, two very often-cited books on the HMS VICTORY, do not give the actual dimensions. McCay really only shows the positions and Longridge contributes only about a paragraph with no dimensions. I have downloaded several pages of the De Agostini version but I can only estimate the dimensions by assuming that the grid lines on the base on which the pieces are being assembled are 10 mm apart. That would make that model's version about 25 mm long by around 15 - 18 mm wide. I can convert this from that model's scale to 1/96 if I have the correct H, W, and circumference of the circular parts.

I've run across that problem in the past. I used to get angry. Now I remind myself that assuming it was an unintentional error and asking help to solve the problem works for me-unless proved otherwise.
