HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning. While I was showing all my blunders yesterday I thought I would share another- my thread I use for the shrouds is from Mantua and it “frays” baldly when working with it. I run a flame through after working on an area e.g. fitting futtock strake and this works wonders.

Anyway yesterday-as I said was one of those mornings and I spilt candle wax on my Mizzen crowsnest. Had to break the stern most strop and using a small blade and some 800 grit sand paper sticks To work it off. Repaired- you can see the futtock shroud strops connected to the dead eyes- got these more in line (not 100%) but better than the starboard side.

Great work Grant, candlewax and all. Enjoy the break, agreed Wilderness and Kirstenbosch are unique, wish I was there :)

It still looks amazing with all the detailed work on the rigging.

Grant, good afternoon. I am still a long way from this stage, but in this place serveny screws were installed to prevent stretching of the guys. Shown with a yellow line.View attachment 303914
Hello Alexander. Thank you for the feedback. I know these are on the futtock strakes on the lower masts, but was unsure they where also on the topmast. This will certainly solve this issue. Thanks again. Cheers Grant

Good morning. Blocks and more blocks to the main mast....and pendants.

Arrow indicates where the futtock shroud lashes onto deadeye. I couldn’t whip these where attach to deadeye so looped around and overhead knot. I got these in line:D

Working with the mast not fitted to the ship is a must- so much easier and not cussing at all;)

I have run out of 0.2mm thread. I have used 70m of this so far (kit only supplies 50m) and have ordered more again. Bought all the stock from Dry Dock (sorry guys). It is the seizing of ropes (shrouds etc) which just eats up thread.

Cheers Grant

Ha! This has become a recurring nightmare for me as well. It's remarkable how much thin rope gets burned up doing any manner of small tasks.

And now for my real post: Grant, your work on the rigging is nothing short of phenomenal, inspiring, fantabulous! The black and beige (or whatever you're calling it) is so classy. I like to think I'm a pretty decent first-time builder, but you have surpassed me by quite a margin. Hats off to you! I sometimes find myself tempted to take short cuts as my build has run on longer and longer. If you can stay the course, you will end up with quite a special Vic.

Paul, you, Grant and I are members of the "NSCC" "No-Short-cut Club"!

That's what I'm trying to join but I think for seizing shouldn't we use sewing thread or is the .2 thread the line that you are seizing or am I completely wrong and need to go back in the shame corner?

Now THAT looks absolutely superb! Wow!!! Thumbsup Exclamation-MarkFirst Place Metal I cannot imagine that anyone could have done that better! Your trip to the Wilderness did you good!
Thank you Heinrich- ahh the Wilderness- negotiating with Unions and striking staff on behalf of one of my clients ( you know what these guys get up to here in SA)....coming back to the peace of the Shipyard was just perfect. Cheers Grant

Thank you Paul- huge compliment. Yes there are a few short cuts- more so when I just don’t get the “proper way” right. And I wish Paul...your build is a special one. Cheers Grant

Hello Rob- I use the 0.2mm to seize the 1mm and 1.2mm thread. I also use it for the whipping. I have not seized smaller thread yet (may not need to) and 0.2 may to big. Cheers Grant

Dear Grant
What more do I have left to say after the exact compliments of the friends before except that I completely agree with them:D and that I just enjoy watching your accurate and beautiful work OkayExclamation-Mark

Hi Rob,

The 0.2 Grant is using (probably closer to 0.23) is about the thickness of very thin thread. It's just made up into a 'true' rope rather than thread-looking. And for the record, I sometimes do some of my seizing with actual thread.

I just use thread. They used yarn back then, so it’s not a big deal if it’s fuzzy.

Grant, really enjoying the close-up visuals. If there are any flaws in your mast and topmast work then I certainly can't see it. Very well done indeed Thumbsup

So it's not just me then. I ran out of all sorts of thread quite early on, possibly as Artesania didn't supply enough, but I think it was primarily due to all my blunders, re-try's and re-do's ROTF

Good morning. Thank you very much. I find that I am inconsistent tho. On some sections I get it really good and then on different applications I cannot replicate my previous work...learning all the time and hopefully one day I will get there. Cheers Grant
