HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning.

Some pics : The Mizzen stays lashed through pendants are done. I tensioned the main forestay using a clip and the main mast shrouds (these are not tied off) so the Mizzen forestays can be tied off. The Mizzen back stays are not tied off for final tension after foremast is on.

Excuse the rum barrels on deck - playing with something to cover the bulwark cuts where deck not cool.

Cheers Grant

Grant, just catching up with your log now. I'm a few pages behind but everything I'm seeing so far is looking brilliant. The full-size pictures really gives an idea how this plan is coming together very, very well Thumbsup

Good morning Heinrich When I went to my shipyard this morning this is what I found....state of emergency declared;)

@RDN1954 Johann, I did not like the look of itROTF. The top mast was broken off my lines all a mess with some of the tape I used to categorize these scattered on the floor. Some of the starboard cannon lids are broken off. (easy fix). Thank God that she did not fall off the table onto the floor. All I can assume is that our rescue cat (my daughter does these things) decided to have fun with all the loose rigging lines hanging downROTF.

My Victory went through Hurricane Ally Cat.

...and now she sits with me in my shipyard....little s&$t!!!

When I repair her I have decided to use larger and stronger insert dowels (previously used toothpicks) so this won’t happen again....although she will probably pull the whole ship on the floor if stronger:eek:

Nothing I can’t fix back to the way she was .

Cheers Grant
That cat has a very evil glint in it's eye. Glad the damage wasn't any worse Grant

The poor cat. It probably got bored in the deep of night and thinking of how Grant has been complaining about his rigging, probably thought it would lend a helping paw. She/he was tensioning the shrouds, when the ship slipped off its stand and toppled over. It was just trying to help. ;)

Served with fava beans and a nice Chianti...

Grant, hi mate.
Be philosophical about it. When I broke the already finished mizzen mast on my Victory, I convinced myself that this was how it had to be, because I didn’t like her anyway. There was a reason to change it. And you know, after the rework, she became better than before. Your cat knew where you needed help :)

Good morning. The cat is forgiven, I had some meetings postponed yesterday, it was raining so played in the shipyard.

The top mast shrouds on main mast where done - not tensioned yet. I got the dead eyes mostly in line and with the tensioning I am sure these will be looking good.

The frustration is the kit dead eyes- no consistency. I have had this problem on the lower shrouds as well. Some juggling is required them reasonable. Is what is is:

Good morning. Rigging “on the ship”..... Redface....this is Grant :

I rigged the backstays and the main stay so I could tension all the shrouds. In my uneducated logic the shroud tension alone may change the 1 degree rake of the mast and alignment. All the backstays will be undone for the futtock shrouds
and ratlines. Clearly nothing tied off.

The Victory has the following backstays :
Blue Arrows
3 topmast standing stays connected via smaller deadeyes
A topmast breast stay connected via tackle and block
Topmast shifting stay - block and tackle
Red Arrows
Top gallant standing stay - deadeye
Top gallant Royal backstay - pendant and lashing

Red arrow is for the mast top stay block however I need to make some more hooks first.

Blunders: First pic:
You will notice the standing stays dead eye lanyards are shorter than the shrouds. This is correct 15mm vs 20mm however I put the stay deadeye on the channel upside downROTF . Some redo coins from @rtibbs for me.

The good news- I got my shroud deadeyes nicely tensioned and mostly aligned:D:D.

2. Not my blunder however the standing stays touch the mast top on way down. These should not. The Mantua build does not include these, in fact only has 3 of the seven, and I only assume the channel or top is out of scale- will have to live with this:

Lastly : sorry guys tried to keep it briefROTF
The main stay heart block lashed to collar which runs through marine walk to bow sprit. Also not tied.

In my book, the tightened shrouds look superb, Grant! I really like the contrast of the black wales and the deadeyes to the lighter color rope that you used.

Thanks Heinrich. The lanyards on the Victory ,well the one in Portsmouth, are hemp colored. It does make good for the contrast tho. One thing which does come up in the photos when we have power cuts due the my battery lighting is the shine or gloss appearance. The painting is Matt and in the natural light much better. Unfortunately in winter all my work is in the dark ( ROTF -probably true). Cheers Grant

Good morning. Going through some of my posts the finish looks very glossy. Sorry guys however most of my building is done early mornings and in the dark- with power cuts- the lights I use makes it glossy. I do use a Matt paint (does have a sheen to it - rather enjoy it although not purist in nature....come to think of it neither is Grants Victory ) and Indian inkHere is a pic I took now : better I think.Cheers Grant

Grant, while your wheels have come off temporarily I think that you should name your ship Perseverance while in the dockyard.
Of course when she is launched it will be Victory.
Following your log you have become an inspiration to to all shipbuilders.

Good evening Ron. True story and thank you for those kind words. Cheers Grant
