HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning. I have run out of rope again!! . I will have to wait for it to be delivered. I attached my main yard. It has enough space for me to still tie the ratlines when my rope arrives. The others will have to wait tho.

The yard is secured to the main mast via a sling which runs around the top. It is lashed and tied off with a double half hitch. (second photo) It also has lifts via the large triple sheaves jeer blocks and this runs back down to mast base through a sheave. (I had to run these lanyards slightly different as the jeer blocks should be a 2 sheave on yard and triple under tresses. Unfortunately I used the Mantua plan here and do not have double sheave jeer blocks).

The jeer blocks are attached to the yard via a 0.5mm hemp rope loop around itself. The sling is served into a pendant and looped around the yard and also lashed with double half hitch on top pendant. Some pics.

To secure the yard from lifting under sail, a double pendant system is looped around the aft of the main mast and tied off with a double sheave block and tackle at base of the mast- as shown below:

ROTF ROTF ROTF Now I see it- love close up photos. The lanyards through the above block and tackle run the wrong way- lucky for Grant this is not tied off.

Cheers Grant

Nice detail! You even have cleats for the ties on the yard. I opted to skip them because they will be covered. Do they show parrals for the yards in the instructions?

Good evening Vic. Thanks for the compliment. I am using Longridge as my rigging basis and various other sources kindly sent to me by fellow SOS guys as the Mantua plans are very simple. There are only parrals on the topmast and top gallant yards. The main yard on the Victory does not have parrals. Cheers Grant

I cannot get past how complex the rigging is on this ship. Amazing pursuit of the details Grant!
Good evening Paul. I think the British government had rope a supply business in those days ROTF - these British loved ropes. When I look what there is still to do I keep thinking "where on earth am I going to tie off all these ropes". No wonder they have so many shroud cleats - which are tiny(even at 1:78 scale) and a "mission" to attached securely. In my pursuit of detail.......it is fun. Frank sent me some documents which awes me. I'm probably getting 50% detail at present. Thanks Paul- looking forward to the time we see you continue with your VASA. Cheers Grant

As I catch up on your excellent log I hope you are recovering well from your recent surgery Grant. It’s good to see you back at the impressive Grant’s Victory. Your rope work looks great and those close-ups really help to follow your progress.

The rigging on your Victory is something else Grant . You could spin me any story you like about what goes where, or what shouldn't go where, and I'd be none the wiser. It all looks tickety-boo from this angle though, and your close-ups are magic. Nice, clean work. I hope you don't wait too long for your ropes...

Good morning. Thanks Mark and Roger (@RogerD ). Appreciate your encouragement. Rigging is a strange thing- sometimes I get it right and then at times it is a struggle. Mark when you get to rig your Fly you will learn about these British ships- fairly similar the Victory as far as I can see....ropes and more ropes. Cheers Grant

Good morning. Not too much work done on the Victory. Tied off the jeer block lanyard and tackle lines for the down haul on the main yard.

The tackle lines tie off to a small cleat on the main mast. I could not get the knot to work correctly so i granny “knotted” and made a false rope loop.

Also doing some netting- my least favorite job- procrastination is the name of the game with these- red arrows..

Hi Grant. Everything is great but the coils. Please feel the difference:

Hello Vladimir. Yes this would be nice. They are also more realistic than mine. I have attempted to do these, however my hemp colored rope from Mantua(kit rope) is polyester and does not loop well. I need a tie in the middle to maintain this. Thanks . Cheers Grant

Beautiful work on the rigging Grant. And about the netting - for sure, it is tedious work, but when it is done, it is done. You already know that it is going to look good, so just bite the bullet buddy!
Thanks Heinrich. Ahh those nets... I do a little and when frustrated move elsewhere and then a little more. Over time they do get sorted. Cheers Grant

Grant,
Awesome rigging work indeed. Your catharpins are also superbly well done. Your close-up images do great justice to this excellent build log.

Cheers,
