HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning.

I tensioned and tied off my Mainstay and main preventer stay. These are lashed to the collars I previously made onto the bowsprit through the marine walk. I need to snake a 0.2mm rope between each of these. This is going to be something Grant is going to need that swear jar for. Some research needs to be done on how to knot these....

Got to love “Grants Victory “....it even changes color . Second pic taken under lights and the color I actually want in third pic with natural sun light. It is to confuse the French and Spanish fleets- first attempt at marine camouflage..

Cheers Grant
Grant, hi mate
Forgive me for writing late, it turns out that the forum's system misses the tracking settings from time to time.
In the last hour I filled in the gaps,
first I would like to wish you a speedy and full recovery, I must say that the healthy and strong spirit you present is inspiring and optimistic (you are back to surfing).
The progress in the ship (the masts and futtock shrouds) and more after the act of "terror" by the cat, simply inspire appreciation.
You and the ship are progressing very good,
well done mate Thumbsup :) Okay

Good morning. Thank you for this. While heartedly appreciated. Cheers Grant

Good morning. I am busy “blocking” the Fore mast. Pretty much the “same same” other than different configuration. I won’t bore you guys with pics again. When all done I will post.

I got bored with the multitude of blocks and decided to see what my Barge will look like on the ship. I had to reshape the stands as the Mantua boats were incorrect and were redone (seen previously). The Mantua stands are just plywood shaped to the hull of the boats, while it should have a stand with skid beams. I stuck with Mantua as I have run out of wood now and you don’t really see these.

The Barge and cutter will be on the deck while I will hang the smaller two boats from quarter Davits.

Boats are still WIP. Not glued in.

Grant is jumping around again.
Cheers Grant

Good afternoon. Still “blocking” got bored again so decided to try my hand at snaking the main and preventer stay. Eish. !!! Dogs breakfast.

I attempted whipping a line zig zagging along, attempted clove hitches - Dogs breakfast. The two stays are not ridged and I couldn’t get the snaking consistent.

I then made the snaking pattern and used diluted PVa so the snaking itself is more firm. This worked better ....still not happy. When I tighten the knots the snaking is pulled up and out of shape. Struggling with this .

I worked it out- anything with a small creature names Grant can not do! MOUSE, RATLINES, SNAKING... Eish! Bring in the pest control company- extermination time

Don't know what the acronym JHB Nd stands for, but that aside, I applaud your patience with this reptilian monster you had to create.
The question though remains, in Grant's scheme of things, is this to your satisfaction, or are you stll looking for revenge on that cold-blooded serpent?

OMW those parts are awfully small and fiddly. I think I am better off struggling with a hull and planking that I can manhandle into submission rather than to fight something I cannot even grip. Hats off to you Grant!

Lots of this Coffee-Cupor Beer. Don’t know which is best when the fiddly stuff constantly heads “South”. But if you feed the “Bad Word Jar” for each occurrence you’ll eventually be able to fund the next project.

Seriously, I admire your tenacity trying to tame that snake.:D

Good evening Johan. JHB Nd....Have no idea ....Someone from Johannesburg hacked my log. The serpent is being left alone for a while now. The jury is out still and I will have to make that call before I fit the foremast. Cheers Grant

Good evening Heinrich. I’m in your corner for sure. Although some of the rigging is super fun. It’s the fiddly things where I have a zero skill base. I have to try get them ok otherwise one little snake line, or mouse and especially ratlines can spoil the entire ship. The slippery serpent actually looks pretty good when just viewing, its when you delve into it and take a photo the “dog’s breakfast “ rears it’s “hooded” head. Cheers Grant

I suppose that is why the phrase "picture perfect" was invented. Sigh ...

Thin black wire run through your pin jig?
I'd be tempted to say good enough...
Good evening Paul. That is a thought. Although I think wire may just be too obvious and not fit in... One of the issues is the stays are only 4mm apart. Not much room to get the zig zag effect. As mentioned to Heinrich they look good just standing back. Ah the jury is out. I’m not sure I could get them much better on a redo anyway and dont detract from Grants Victory. Cheers Grant

Hello Jan- I think I need moreBeerBeerBeerrather. My bad word jar is now full. The Cazador Xebec has been funded and is on its way. Thanks for your encouragement. Cheers Grant

Grant, have you actually seen that snake being modeled or is it just on the rigging plans?

Hello Heinrich. I have. I am looking at 2 Victory builds- one a scratch build by Ed (who got this just right- a skilled modeler for sure) and another by Gil (made a stunning Victory) who also has the same issue as my self. When I view other British ships I am not alone in the “snake pit”. Very few actually detail their process of how they do it.

Cheers Grant

Good morning

The blocks on the fore mast are done- I shiver seeing the number of these thinking how many lines I need to thread and tie off at a point. Many more here than the main and Mizzen masts, the reason being some of the clewlines and buntlines from the bowsprit belay via the foremast. Some pics:

While having a break from the blocks I attached the main mast lamp. I never really liked the Mantua supplied lamps, certianly not authentic, however doing one or two mods and painting these rather than the shinny brass it doesn’t look too bad.

Ps- the changing colour of Grants Victory depending on light....well here are pics of the Victory at Portsmouth....it too has “Marine camouflage ;);)ROTFROTFROTF

Looks great. Was wondering if that zigzag line needs to be served or not? Also, did you glue the line to the stays? I seem to have had some success with using CA glue at the points where the line attaches to the stays. Also, I served the lines. Looked better on my model.
