HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning

The blocks on the fore mast are done- I shiver seeing the number of these thinking how many lines I need to thread and tie off at a point. Many more here than the main and Mizzen masts, the reason being some of the clewlines and buntlines from the bowsprit belay via the foremast. Some pics:

While having a break from the blocks I attached the main mast lamp. I never really liked the Mantua supplied lamps, certianly not authentic, however doing one or two mods and painting these rather than the shinny brass it doesn’t look too bad.

Cheers Grant

Ps- the changing colour of Grants Victory depending on light....well here are pics of the Victory at Portsmouth....it too has “Marine camouflage ;);)ROTFROTFROTF

In no time you're promoted to blockmaster, or is it blockbuster? Ah well, a beautiful job.
Btw, do you have lights in the lantern?

Grant, just caught up with your log now (not getting the notifications any more?), and when I look at the photos I have to remind myself that this is your first ship building endeavour; I still can't get my head around that. You are doing a grand job and are redefining the meaning of vasbyt and perseverance. Great to watch Thumbsup

But now that I've pumped up your profile, get back to work now and sort out all those blocks ROTF

Grant, you have my utmost respect for all those blocks and subsequent rigging that is lying in wait. I will keep following along, keep supporting you and swing my pom-poms as best as I can!

Seriously though, your blocks look like great. Once you have truly mastered a "one step at a time" approach, you will see that your to-do list will rapidly become shorter.

Hi Grant, WOW your last effort at the zigzag looks great to me. Your overall attention to detail, especially in your rigging is fantastic. I don't know about South Africa but here in the states we have fabric shops that sell thousands of types of thread. If you have such a place there are threads that are metalized and very flexible. Just a thought that might just be what you are looking for?

Wow! That's a lot of blocks Grant! I was feeling a bit sorry for myself yesterday hanging blocks off my stays but my rigging obligation is a mere fraction of what you are doing on the Vic
Good morning Paul. Plenty of lines however besides the shroud cleats, they are relatively simple- nothing like the crows feet connections etc on the Vasa. I am doing all the clew lines and buntlines even though I am not making sails so does mean more blocks.Hopefully I have not forgotten any blocks . Cheers Grant

Looks great. Was wondering if that zigzag line needs to be served or not? Also, did you glue the line to the stays? I seem to have had some success with using CA glue at the points where the line attaches to the stays. Also, I served the lines. Looked better on my model.
Good morning Jack. I used a 1mm thread with clove hitches to connect the snaking to the stays. The stays and snaking are not served on the Victory other than the top section by the mouse. I think at this scale if I served the snaking it would look too big in relation to the stays. Thanks Cheers Grant

Good morning Mark. Thanks. I have one motto- I keep going as long as I am having fun- when Jans’ that famed swear jar starts getting too full I start doing something else. Blocks on fore mast are done.:D. Cheers Grant

Good morning Heinrich. Your Pom poms have been a consistent encouragement to me, so Thank you and keep swinging :D.
Ahhh the “one step at at time “. Good advice for sure, however I have “bouncy” personality. I cannot keep focused on one thing for too long and then want to play elsewhere....how on earth I have got this far is a miracle in itselfROTF. Building these little ships is a hobby to me and is super fun. When the fun factor starts to diminish I regenerate it by moving to something else....jumping Jack for sure as you have seen on this log a multitude of occasions. Cheers Grant

Good morning Daniel. Thank you- much appreciated this. I’m sure we do have these. I will have a look and see what I can resource. Thanks. Cheers Grant

Right. Not forgetting blocks is no small request. Just last night I was looking at the museum plans for the Vasa trying to sort out the rigging of the bowsprit and out of nowhere four blocks appeared on the drawing that were not there before. What the &@% (deftly avoiding the swear jar here) - where did those come from???

Murphy was paying you a visit or was it gremlins:)

That happens more often than one would think. Every model I have ever built(4) has had that sort of thing. Very annoying. Also equally annoying is when they tell you to add a block and then it is never seen again in the plans.
