HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

That is very good work, Grant. Seeing how successful the mizen mast ratlines turned out, I also see no reason to change tactics.

Good morning. Starboard lower main mast ratlines completed. Took a while- I have many more still to go- Eish!

I experimented with fixing main yard to see how it effects the construction of my ratlines. (See previous posts). Some modelers hoist their yards prior to doing ratlines as it will make the belaying of the ropes easier as the ratlines won’t get in the way at the belay pins etc. I have decided not to do this as the yard does create some issues with the ratlines for me. With the Victory if you leave the multitude of topmast and top gallant stays not “tied” there is space for you to work at the belay pins. I may regret this latter. So for me ratlines first as I did with the Mizzen.

I have used the Mantua thread which is not the best however does not look bad at all. I will carefully run a flame through these which does remove any fluff- hopefully I don’t set the Victory a flame...although the French and Spanish would like this;)

Cheers Grant
Ahhh, good old ratlines. Isn't there a running record for the most number of ratlines on model? I reckon the Victory might stand a chance with that one :)

All part of the grand plan. Lure the competition into a false sense of superiority and security --- Then ZAP em at the world cup like mozzies over a braai. AB's are like a Phoenix they always rise and rise again. :);):);) -------- Congratulations Boks, well done and excellent play. (I only watched Euro Cup and then Commonwealth Games. Lucky NZ sent a team of cyclists over :D) - cheers.
Oooo fighting talk, I like it! Then again, point taken, it won't be the first time we've fallen for that false sense of security thing ROTF
Always a great contest, already looking forward to the next match Thumbsup

Looks great, the ratlines and whole ship vista is beautiful.
If I ever get to the ratline stage on my build I will see what all the fuss is about.

That are again a lot of knots, all very well lined up. Nice and precise work, Grant.

Good morning Richie. Thank you. Oh you will, these take forever and after like six rows we are thinking if the waves are good today for a nice surfROTF. Make the model look cool tho so is worth while “taking a long time”. Cheers Grant

Good morning Mark...it most certainly is. The poor All Blacks, never quite get it right at the World cups- 3 to SA and 3 to the AB. Most pointy @ConsNZ we are the current World Champions...;). However there is a valid point - the AB’s are like a wounded Buffalo and I expect they are going to come out as such on Saturday. Cheers Grant....now back to those ratlines.

I don’t know if you have watched The Lord of the Rings, however I feel like Tree Beard the ent....“it takes a very long time Master Hobbit”.ROTF.Cheers Grant
Oh Yes, almost every year we played the DVD’s. I can imagine now your feeling. Luckily my BN has less, but I am looking forward to the rigging.
Regard, Peter

Good morning. They are a mission. I can’t give too much advice, however some methods which helped me:
- prepare a stencil with the correct gap between each line and these lines must be parallel to the waterline.
- when you do the clove hitches make sure each one is tight. You have to be careful here not to make the longitudinal tension too tight(changes shape of shrouds) or too loose as they just don’t look nice.
- if you have good thread it helps massively. I’m using kit thread and while came out good it does fluff.
- otherwise I just take my time. Do like 6 and then do something else. More due “I have had enough already.” Paul @dockattner has really good posts on his log re ratlines. His are super good too. Good luck and keep going
Cheers Grant

That is a great looking set of ratlines. They are all tight and straight. How did you get them so tight?
Yeah. You can turn the Victory into one of those fire ships. Ram it into the Occre Santisima Trinidad. lol

Super Job. I love doing Rats( seriously), whilst tedious its mind numbing bliss and world just disappears. Although I think I' coming around to the joy of copper plating!.:)
Good evening Paul. I have heard others concur with you. I do find it fun.... for a while and then the fun factor rapidly disappears ;). Luckily, as you know, there is plenty other things to make or rig on this ship. Maybe one day I will get into the zone you achieve. Cheers Grant
