HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

It wasn't a comprehensive victory over the SA team but certainly a very intensive game. Never discount the All Blacks especially when they're down the gurgular. Ritchie is 100% correct all the news here is about hanging or keeping the coach. Starting to read like a comedy show. Pumas top, Aussies crying - Excellent way to have a competition Almost as exciting as doing Ratlines and attaching Boltropes. Life is Beautiful :)
Good morning. That it is. Going to be a cracker of a second half to the championship for sure - Thankfully the Pumas don’t travel well. Cheers Grant

Good afternoon. Back to “Grants Victory” Just a quick update. I “seated”the foremast. Used a set square to achieve 90 degree rake and a plum line and scale. All lined up. The two red arrows show the two yards on the main mast. These have not been aligned off yet so are out of symmetry. Will be squared off when I do the topping lift lines.

Wow just realised that is a huge ship, it's going to need it's own room.

Hi Grant. In reality the masts must have about 3 degrees of rake aft. Because while sailing the ship is slightly down by the bow.
Good afternoon Vladimir. Yes I agree. With the Victory the Mizzen is around 3.8 degrees (talking from memory) the main just over 1 and the foremast is 0. I am in agreement with you re the need for rake so I hope my research on these three are accurate. Cheers Grant

Hi Grant. That full frontal looks excellent my friend! Slowly, but surely you are getting the hang of this thing called rigging and are making very good progress. The squared off yards look excellent, so with the other two also squared, you will have a mightily impressive view!

Good morning. Ratlines and more ratlines. The main mast port side done except for futtock shrouds. Just some pics.
.....and the shape of the stay changed as I tensioned and progressed. Don’t even suggest it a I will not be requesting a redo icon from Ron ROTF
Cheers Grant
Your ratlines are top notch Grant Thumbsup

Just keep the cat away ....

Brilliant. How good is that all going to look when it's done?
BTW Grant, what are the dimension of your Victory? From the pictures it seems to rise right up to your ceiling

Good morning Mark. It is a 1:78 scale. It is a pretty large model - 1.3m L, 920mm H, 450mm W. Rather fun to work on. :D. Thank you for your compliment on the ratlines. I have no idea how many knots I have made and still have to....will count when done or I may just lose the plot.;).Cheers Grant

Good morning Richie. It is rather. Starting to look rather impressive....well if you stand back a little ;) . Luckily my pub is quite large and there is a perfect space for it. I will need to buy a table for it. Some time in the distant future tho considering how much work is still to be done. Cheers Grant

The WB's masts are exactly half that height! ROTF

Dear Grant
your work on the Ratlines and the foremast, looks beautiful

Good morning. Setting up the shrouds on the foremast.

Lower shrouds. The template with the deadeyes attached with thin wire is connected to the deadeyes on the channel. I use this to ensure the deadeyes are in line and run parallel to the channel. The Victory has 22 (11 SB and 11 PS) shrouds on this mast and the Difference in the length of the lanyards between the fore most dead eye and aft most is significant due the the change in angle of the shrouds. The only way I could achieve the deadeyes to be linear is to make the template.

I secure the deadeye with a clove hitches. The whipping of each dead eye to the shroud will be done later. The tie off of the Lanyards cover the clove hitches- this is technically the incorrect way to do it however it will not be seen. Whew....;). This also enables me to rotate the deadeye before whipping to ensure these are correct- I see some need rotation.

The top of each shroud is served (rope eater for sure). Each shroud needs to be looped around the mast in sequence. Don’t forget the two Burton pendants to go on first- these are not served.

Top mast shrouds. These are connected to the deadeyes on the Crowsnest using a single piece of wire bent to correct gap. These are all close together and the Lanyards are the same length so no template needed. These have been whipped but not tensioned. (Seen in above photo).

Got some paint on my one block..... @rtibbs redo coin- (I think Ron has run out by now)ROTF

I then do one of the main stays to the bow sprit. I need to do all these simultaneously to ensure when the tension of each deadeye is done the mainstay is also tensioned. Everything will be tensioned at the same time to ensure the mast rake is maintained and the rope tensions are all good.

Now to do 44 whippings on the deadeyes- going to take a while.

PS my mouse is getting better;)ROTF
PS-2 You guys like my dressing gown and slippers...sexyROTF
PS 3 You will notice “No Finesse Grant” broke off the railing on the crow nest. This was a blessing in disguise and all the work around there was easier. Tip for Victory builders- leave the railings till later.

Cheers Grant

What a mammoth undertaking, Grant! You have my utmost respect and what is so amazing in how short a space of time you have learnt how so much! You seem to know where everything goes - which reading about rigging in general - seems to be the exception rather than the rule!
