HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Grant, super job mate! It is clear you need some serious organizational skills to manage and keep all that rigging straight! Thumbsup

Good evening. Foremast lower shrouds continued.

The stays whipped to the deadeyes- two whippings on each.

The main forestay was whipped to a heart block and lashed with 0.5mm hemp rope to the collar on the bowsprit. Nothing is tied off or tensioned. I used an AL 7mm, should be 8mm on my scale but resources as you know are an issue here in SA. The Mantua kit instructions are to connect these by deadeyes. From what I have read the heart block and collar is correct.

The shrouds lanyards where connected one at a time from the stencil. This gave me another chance to correct the pattern and angle from the topmast through the tresses.

All are very loose and no tension. I will tension from the aft and alternate SB and PS as I go. The fore stay will also be tensioned as I go. Hopefully this will all come out lovely:oops:

OH I must include my improving, still a
Long way to go mouse.

My prayers go to you as I am sure you will do fine but there will be some choice words for the back and forth you will play with this tension game. May your mast stay true my friend

Wow. Absolutely great work and great close-up shots. This time around, I could even understand some of what you were saying! :) Seriously though, this is very neat and impressive work.

Thanks guys. I will respond individually, however some advice from guys in the know would be appreciated.

@Daniel20 , @dockattner , @Alexander74 @Walterone, @Heinrich @Thomas Marocke @ANYBODY.

Question:

Should I prepare the stays from the Mainmast to the foremast, the foremast backstays and the foremast preventer stays before I tension the shrouds or is this overkill? Grants logic (which when boat building is sketchy at best) says the one forestay and shrouds is enough?

Cheers Grant

I'm probably not the best person to ask since I have the same amount of experience as you... But I installed temporary stays on all lower masts - then installed and tensioned all shrouds - then I went back and placed real stays. I still haven't installed backstays. No preventer stays on the Vasa.

For the record none of my lines are really that tight - polyester rope likes to be straight on its own so it looks good even when its not under tension like a guitar string.

Hello Paul. Yep that is the answer. Temporary stays did not even come to mind , however that will cover my concerns. I did not want to fit the backstays and the stay from Main to Foremast now. Appreciate the response. Thanks Grant.

Hi Rob. Thank you. The tensioning was interesting on the Main mast so I’m attempting other methods to make it simpler. Paul has come up with some assistance by suggesting Temp stays which will help. Cheers Grant

Excellent, your mouse has the webbing which to me is a high standard of detail.
Thanks Daniel always appreciate your comments. The mouse is a bit of a “cheat” as I use thin material plaster to wrap it rather than do webbing which I could not achieve. It has given me the best outcome thus far. Cheers Grant

Good evening Heinrich. “ Maybe” ;) I should take some English lessons from you so my posts are more understandable;).Seriously tho thank you very much for your comments. Always appreciate them. Never in my wildest dreams
did I believe the rigging process was so immense. I am not even close to finishing the standing rigging which I understand is the “easy” part of the process. Cheers Grant

Wow Grant. Looking great! Your mouse and serving of your fore main stay are fantastic. Very cool.
Good evening Hoss. Apologies don’t know your name? Your likes and comments are appreciated. The Victory has so much serving. I have no idea how many meters of rope it has used up so far. Still plenty more to go. Thank you. Cheers Grant

As you like to say Grant: true story.

At times it all feels rather overwhelming, doesn't it? I have found it necessary to just forget about all that remains to be done and try to focus in on achievable daily or weekly sub-goals. For example, let me try to get half the robands on such and such a sail this morning. Or, let's install bowlines on the fore topsail today. After a few weeks of tiny victories I can look back and see that there HAS been overall progress even though each work session feels pretty inconsequential.

At least now you understand why there are so many unfinished Vics out there...
