HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Hi Grant, regarding critical path with respect to the various stays, the direction of tension is (for all practical purposes) 90 deg to the shroud line tension direction. Therefore, I do not believe it matters if you tension your shrouds first or later. On my ship I finished all shrouds with tautness not tightness prior to setting any back/fore stay lines.

Edit: I did set Fore and main mast backstays prior to the shrouds but it was purely for ease of access.

Good evening Heinrich. “ Maybe” ;) I should take some English lessons from you so my posts are more understandable;).Seriously tho thank you very much for your comments. Always appreciate them. Never in my wildest dreams
did I believe the rigging process was so immense. I am not even close to finishing the standing rigging which I understand is the “easy” part of the process. Cheers Grant
There is nothing wrong with your English, Grant - the problem is my lack of English terminology when it comes to the rigging.

Hello Daniel. That makes sense. The foremast on the Victory has no rake so any deviation from the vertical will be noticeable. I am being over cautious here and having a temporary backstay and the forestay part of the tension I will be ok. The diameter of the lower mast is also large and there is not much flex in it. I did the Main mast as you suggest and any movement not noticeable. Thanks Grant

As you like to say Grant: true story.

At times it all feels rather overwhelming, doesn't it? I have found it necessary to just forget about all that remains to be done and try to focus in on achievable daily or weekly sub-goals. For example, let me try to get half the robands on such and such a sail this morning. Or, let's install bowlines on the fore topsail today. After a few weeks of tiny victories I can look back and see that there HAS been overall progress even though each work session feels pretty inconsequential.

At least now you understand why there are so many unfinished Vics out there...
No doubt Paul. It is like : how do you eat an elephant ....one bite at a time. I have noticed how Many Victories are incomplete. Always wondered why, now I know. Non the less I am still enjoying the build immensely....one bite at a time. Cheers.

Even we in the previously English colonies have difficulty with English rigging terms! Then I came across the French term for the foremast top, which translates as "parakeet".

Your shrouds will hold the mast stable. The back & for stays can be left till last as you build the mast upward The issues is not the rake, but curving the mast due to excessive tension on the upper stays The only have to appear taught, its only a model. ( I learnt the hardway on my first ship).
Pre strech the stays. I leave mine hangning with weights for a few days prior to fitting.

Good morning

Thanks Ron @rtibbs , Peter @Peter Voogt , Johan @RDN1954 , Kurt @DARIVS ARCHITECTVS , Jan @Pathfinder65. The comments, help, the likes and views from SOS guys is magic. Thanks

Paul @paulv1958 thank you for your assistance. The Mantua Rope does have a stretch factor. Learnt this the hard way on the Mizzen. I tension the shrouds a little , leave for a day or two then tension correctly and leave for another day or two. This worked well for my Main mast. I do agree the topmast and top gallant masts carry the most risk of “flex” Thanks again for the advice.

I’m going to have time before I tie these off so I may as well make some of the fore stays for the main and fore topmast. When I tension the topmast shrouds I will have all the tools to avoid the curving.....”so they say”.;)These will overcome my concerns.
Cheers Grant

Good morning Heinrich. When I read my posts I confuse myself at timesROTF. These ships are crazy- when I consult the art of rigging I am only familiar with say 20% of the terms. When I complete the Victory one day perhaps I will squeak a pass. ;)Cheers Grant

After 10 pages of catching up, I say …WOW! You have made a lot of progress Grant and your rigging looks fantastic!
Good morning Dean. Ah so good to “see” you again. Hope you doing well. Thank you. So much to learn and do with my ship. I’m still having fun doing it all which is why we build these little at times complex ships. Cheers Grant

Thank you Grant! I am recovering from getting Covid, I still have Bronchitis, but getting better day by day. No modeling lately for me, but soon. Been playing a lot of guitar lately though! ;)
Your learning has progressed quickly on this ship, and your results show knowledge and skill! Keep up the great work!
