HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Oohh. That looks like a nasty old "burn" on the forearm. It is great to see that it didn't hamper your progress - that looks as good as always.

Good morning. Very little work done this weekend. Loads of family time and even did my first MTB enduro race in 3 years. Loads of fun. Like my Victory build I even had an oops on one of the timed downhill ROTF .

I did manage to make the kevels this morning and fitted them on the quarter deck. The Mantua plans (as posted a while back) has the ladder to cannons very cramped and this was and interesting fit.

I love close up photos- I see my netting(my least favorite job on my Victory thus far) needs some trimming- out with the nose hair scissors again.ROTF. Cheers Grant
It always surprises me when I look at pictures and see something I couldn't seem to see when looking at the actual subject. Nice work on the guns.

I have had gravel and asphalt cleaned out of my knees and hip a few times from moments of excitement on the bike.

Good morning Jeff. Thanks. On the whole the quarter deck came out well, however now I have learnt a few things I would do many aspects differently. Yep, a good “rostie” is a good reminder to self. Cheers Grant

I must not be trying hard enough as I’ve never laid my bike down (yet) :)
Good morning Ron. Absolutely agree- you should give it a go sometime ROTF ROTF .
...and who said so???? The Doctor...
ROTF- that he did!
Ouch, that smarts! Ship is looking good! ;)
Thank you Dean. On the whole it is impressive, if I say so myself ;). My detail is amateurish tho and so much detail work has been neglected. Not by design just by being a rookie and limited skill. My rigging I have learnt so much more and I have been researching loads and building with some understanding. This being said I’m probably only getting 50% accurate.

Cheers Grant
PS how cool is this- I can reply to multiple guys on one post- learnt this by error however really awesome feature.

This morning when doing one of the forestay to the bowsprit the realization dawned upon me that my bowsprit rigging was incorrect. I did mostly follow the Mantua plans (done before I tossed them) with loads of improvement from photos of the Portsmouth Victory. Was very simplistic for a complex rigging configuration.

However - even tho it looked good (see previous posts) none of the martingale lines went through tackle and blocks, nor would the jib stays, the rope thickness was way out etc etc etc....

All chopped off. Now to redo properly. The look and feel won’t change too much however the tensioning Of the martingale’s and the stays will possible and I am understanding way more. “Art of rigging” is so good even tho I’m only able to apply about 20%.

Redo coin Ron!

Have so much fun.

Ok last comment as I need to go and make some money Redface. For future Victory builders- If one has to build this ship accurately this is a 10 year project no doubt. It reminds me of Manfred’s Victory which took 40 years to build (a post of his Victory is on SOS. ) This puts into perspective the just how much detail I have left off this ship- again not by design more just by me having no idea the complexities of this hobby.
Cheers Grant

Ooch ….. some deja-vu’s ….. but I still ride my MTB. To much fun. I hope it will recover soon, Grant.

If you've never crossed ‘the limit’, you don't know where it is.;)
Regards, Peter

True story Peter. Totally agree it is a magic sport - you get everything. Mountains, views, fresh air, exercise, adrenaline, some ouch's once in a while and time with friends and family. Clearly I'm still trying to find the limit after many years of riding...ROTF. Cheers Grant

A true spider's web. Keep up good work because your're doing great. I suggest you to buy some milling machine. You won't notice when it'll be your third hand.
Good morning. True story. I need to buy a whole load of equipment, a milling machine included. The exacto blade, a paint brush and some handmade jigs does not really "cut" it...... ;) . Cheers Grant

Grant, I finally managed to catch up with your log. I went through it quite fast so it was a bit like the static pictures on a pack of cards that come to life when you flip through them quickly ROTF And it's all looking good, for sure. I can't even begin to imagine the challenges you face with all that rigging, not to mention the blood-stained elbows and never ending re-do's. I'm sure one day, when you point out all the finer points of sailing and ship-building to your grandkids and great grandkids, you will be sure to remember each and every sacrifice and effort you made along the way. As Paul said, if you don't bleed then you aren't trying ROTF
As always, looking forward to your continued progress. True story Thumbsup

Good morning. Always good to hear from a fellow Safer. Things getting hectic here- Unions nationally flexing there muscles and I’ve had to jump into one of the businesses to negotiate with clients and unions- these guys are strike mad at present- some interesting times ahead. You know the story. Not much Victory work this week. Cheers Grant

Good morning. Very little work done this week.
The yard lifts for the main mast yards where done. The only interesting point is that these belay differently to the Mizzen.

I used my protractor method to attempt 90• to the mast and hopefully they lined up with the Mizzen yards.
