HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning. The fix of my mizzen mast is on hold until I can find some decent wire for the dead eye strops for the fruttock shrouds. I’m mean time :

I inserted the eyelets at base of each mast.I left these brass as they fit with the cannon rigging. 4 rather than 2 as I am going to use extra rigging from plans- I hope my interpretation of the Victory rigging is correct and 4 is sufficient.

I made the anchors- not too much change from plans- the bands on the stock I used tape cut to size rather than rope. I first used cardboard but these band were too bulky as in photo. I seized the brass ring with 0.25 thread and stained black with Indian ink. I also rounded the end of each stock and used exacto blade and sanding stick to shape these.

The hole on the stock where shank goes through had to be shaped bigger and oval as the head of the shank is bigger than the shaft. To fill the hole I used tape wrapped around prior to gluing the stock.

I am debating adding the contrast seizing (3per anchor ) on each ring.2639C345-F16A-4E30-93FF-B61A71A6AD78.jpegF9B1F5F0-0240-41C0-A30E-827753EF8354.jpeg357DF18F-03C8-44F6-8452-249D7618B3F2.jpeg6DECFF89-4C6D-4BD3-9EC8-70A4DF39BBB0.jpegE8103F0E-C9D5-434E-8021-5AA5E565C042.jpeg

I don' know how extended are yor rigging plans. On this site there are plans " HMS Victory 1/100 with recommended blocks" so you can compared it with yours.Revell,Airfix 180-225 with recommended blocks is also worth checking

Thank you for this. The Mantua Victory plans are very limited. I have been researching various rigging diagrams with the Caldercraft being the most accurate. I will not be adding sails to my Victory so this will be a big saving to me. I will have a look at these plans as well. Much appreciated. Cheers Grant

Good morning Grant, dispassionate advice, since you intend to equip Your Victory to consult only real texts and not those of Kit or commercial plans, (the texts for me are the bible) by David Steel - Elements and practice of rigging (London 1794) volume I / II, [Jean Boudriot. The rest is diluted water

Ciao Frank. Being my first ship I’m making quite a few changes to the kit however I’m certainly not in ready to challenge a historically accurate build yet. Thanks for this advice tho. Cheers

Good evening. Here is my construction of the galley chimney. I made it per the kit with following additions.

I used 0.8mm brass wire and 0.2mm wire to make the handles, the hinges and simulate the cover on the top of the “exhaust “ (for a better word?). Masking tape was cut again for the weld line and the band at the base. Needle files were used to shape the chimney. Dry fit.For The base I used a 1mm rectangle and again reduced the size and height from the kit. The jury is out on this and will see on my return. Have an awesome weekend all. Cheers

A very interesting observation after I built this- my gratings are not to scale or the chimney is too thin. I used the kit measurements for both these and it is way off from the kit design. I will not be changing these.

Mantua really seems to have gotten their sizes haywire on some of the fittings. Your exhaust looks so good, but the base diameter definitely seems to be too small when compared to the real McCoy. Oh boy ... it never stops, does it?

I think you’re doing great! You can’t expect every aspect of the ship to be spot on to scale. I know they have the real thing to look at in the Victory, but being able to mass produce something to scale would be tough. That’s why we get to improvise and create our own interpretations of the ship. Sometimes I think that’s where the real joy of building begins.

Hello Heinrich. You are correct. I have seen many modelers go for what I have done tho. I think my gratings are too far apart rather than the chimney base being to small....or a bit of both. We shall see. The Sergal kit I got is a really old one so I wonder if the panart is better in this regard. Cheers

Hello Vic. Thanks. Absolutely agree. As I have mentioned I am just having fun and doing what I can. Cheers

Good morning. I finished the forward fenders. I inserted a sheave (Rather than the two holes provided) for the anchor rope and shaped them to fit over the Wales and decorations. I had to scratch make the anchor palm blocks for the sheet anchors. I used 8x1.5mm birch(only wood supply here) and beveled the tops to try and get some shape per real ship and shaped a 6x6 block with Dremel as the support knee.

Cheers Grant
