Did you say, the Lions's Roar?Good morning Stephan. Welcome back....it's been a while. I'm looking forward to seeing the Lion roar..... . Cheers Grant
Wow, these movies are so bad, that it is joy to look.Did you say, the Lions's Roar?
Thanks Daniel, I got hard feelings before I start with it. Now I want to go on.Yes sir, you have a good-looking start to your lion.
Firstly, I would like to thank everyone here again for visiting my blog, the likes and encouraging comments. The fridge has been restocked, some here know where it is by now.
I had hoped to show this update earlier, but I once again had severe arthritis in my left hand, which was 100% out of action as a result. Holding a spoon for coffee was already too much. But after a day or two, I could do everything again. Well there are worse things in life shall we say, things are going fine again now and I can do quite a bit of work with breaks.
The best example of a lion that I got is the Batavia and the 7 provinciën, Maarten shared some pictures with me and I find a few on the www
I showed this picture before, it is this one:

not the one in gold, that is another. The one with the crown is the 7P and without the Batavia.
Where to start carving? Why not with the hardest part. The mouth and nose of the lion. When that goes wrong, I don't have to start over. All the parts have a place on the piece of wood I just have to make sure they got connected and the right shape. Or how I like to say, the excess wood must be sanded away. It is difficult to find the right shape and proportion, as well as the direction the nose should point to. But I think I am on the right track and have managed to recreate the mouth with teeth quite well.

I used these burs/cutters for the job.

that one (the spearshape) I use for lines and flatten out parts of wood.
Therefore I use the next one to, most of the time for big junks of wood that need to flatten.
The pear shape to shape the rounding (the spear shape I use to for that)
The pear or drop shape on the far left.

The round one to go deeper in the wood, like the mouth.

the smallest I use was 0,6 mm. and the biggest 2,3 mm. But most of the time 0,9 mm.

The next thing I used was time. This part took me about 7 hours in total. But it is fun and I did it in 2 days with a lot of breaktime.
Thanks for visit my log.
A good looking start, Stephan. Examples enough to find the one you liked. Looking forward how your adjustments worked out.I'm still not 100% happy with the mouth. When you look to the lion of the 7P in post #805 you see an angry lion. My lion is more happy. And I see the problem. The under jaw is in the lion I carved horizontal, that's wrong. The edges should go down and the jaw needs to be smaller one the sides. Also the underlip needs to loose fat. (Me too, but that's another problem in my life )
I think that this correction on the lion is possible, so I will give it a try, see what happens.
By the way the first link, LINK1 I shared in post #805 lees to the spear like bur/cutter. I used it for the second time and it is a very good cutter to work with. There are a lot of possible uses and it doesn't catch easily in the wood.
Absolutely great, Looks perfect.
WOW! You are off to an excellent start, mon ami!
Adi Jim and Maarten thanks for the compliments. They are some kind of vitamins, they keep me going on. To long, so my last update today. Tomorrow another day.Looks already great Stephan. Even the eye brows already seem to be in place.
That's why I like to share every step, even if it goes wrong. Most of the time you only see the end result. I'm thinking of shooting a video, I will make tomorrow a setup to record some steps and upload them on YouTube. This is fun to watch the progression!
Thanks dakyzwPerfect!!!
