Kingfisher 1770 1:48 POF

Wow, next level scratch building you show here. Very impressive and the details on this scale, just crazy!
I’m looking forward on the finish you will give this piece of art. I’ve seen your painting skills, so this must be a walk in the park for you. great work Paul!

As far as I'm concerned this is a keeper - no need to start all over in wood (especially since this stove will be hardly visible). Indeed, this whole mini-build was primarily for my enjoyment and for your voyeuristic entertainment ROTF.

That's a great looking stove Paul! Very well constructed, finished, and most authentic looking. A pity it won't be more visible in your finished ship. I enjoyed the journey through your pictures, including the great one of your grandson :)

Good morning Paul. You have had enough compliments on your stove so no more although the accolades are well deserved. Suffice to say the best stove I have seen. :D How the admiral lets you play with your ship while on holiday is beyond me. I think Arlene would take me out with that monster truckROTF. Cheers Grant.

Hi Paul,

That was a holiday well spend.

Marvelous your grandson in front of Gravedigger. Guess you now have a new hobby, build an RC grave digger for your grandson for racing in your garden, you will be the best grandpa ever.
Except you have to explain to your admiral why it is needed to race through the flower beds. 8-)

Borrowing a page from my friend @Maarten 's playbook - I took a little project along with me on our recent holiday.

The Kingfisher had an early version of what would eventually be known as a Brodie Stove on board. Now, while more skilled builders would make this stove out of brass, I doubted my ability to fabricate and solder all of the necessary elements. I think I could have made a stove at 1:48 out of wood - but I decided to first try my hand at plastic.

To that end I reached out to Marc (@Hubac’s Historian) and asked about best practices when it came to working with plastics. He was very kind to offer me some advice along with material and glue recommendations. Naturally I would not be able to work at his level, but I have long been inspired by his excellent results.

In preparation I ordered the necessary supplies and packed everything up in a small box and off we went.

Cutting out parts:

Adding angled corner braces and edging:

Next...doors (oven, firebox, ashes, etc.), hinges door handles and latches, and some square bolts...

Here you can see the beginning of the chimney, the boiler with round and oval covers, and a pipe for a still:

Now accessorizing with grates, irons for pot hanging, and boiler discharge valves:

Thank you, Peter. I was looking forward to the paint job. The white on black was all pretty jarring to look at!

Awesoooooooomly made, I called these: skills in action, perhaps you have a scarce small size of a penny...
Yup. Small penny. Big hands.

But you guys will know what's hidden away. A solid reminder that some aspects of this hobby are madness.

Wow, that is a fantastic bit of modeling. Nicely done.

Thank you Jan. I'm sure you recognized your special friend. A small two-year-old meets a big monster truck - the drivers and teams go out of their way to make sure the kids have a great day.

The stove is looking great. Your stove remembers me at the beginning of my model builing many years ago, Revell kits.
Well, the traditionalists might scoff at the idea of a plastic stove in a wooden ship - but I did the best I could working with materials I was comfortable with. Maybe a plastic ship in my future?

Like you I have a secret...just get up before anyone else is awake and have my fun for the day and no one was the wiser.

Love the painting of the stove.
The stove looks stunning, very nice paint job.
The stove looks great , very nice paint job.
Super. Pozdrawiam Mirek
Love the stove, nice work!!
I love this oven - great work
Thank you kindly, gentlemen. I'm glad the painting turned out OK otherwise it was going to be a big waste of time.

Hi Paul, I too think that is among the best model stoves out there. What did you use to cut the plastic pieces?
Thanks Daniel. Just a #11 XActo blade and a straight edge. But that leaves a raised up area along the line of the cut that then needs to be smoothed down with a fine sanding stick.

I like the way you think Maarten :p.

Indeed, he looks great. Bet he is much more mobile without the cast on his leg. R and I think you should buy him smaller ride on toys.ROTF
