La Candelaria - Occre Build log

Good tip which I didn't think of but will take note of it.
Supports are in & the main deck fits nicely in place.
I experimented simulating chalking with some scrap lumber & decided that using sewing thread looked the most realistic as you can see on the mortar deck. It needs to be trimmed, tree nails added & stained. Chalking the main deck in this manner will be tedious. Any thoughts on this technique?

Hi. I've been using it on my Hoy. It's a bit awkward, honestly, but it prevent hateful staining from pencil or dyeing. The outcome is also overall good, as the "true caulking" is evident even in 1:48 scale and the textile could fair minor misalignments occurring in the planking process. Regards.

Hi everyone. After about a years hiatus from building my ship I started back up about a month ago. For me this is a winter project as I have other projects going on from spring through autumn. I also missed & did not record a lot of steps in my log. Sorry about that sometimes I become a little lazy when I shouldn't.
Anyway, in the last month I installed the mast & have most of the standing rigging up. now I'm working on the shrouds & ratlines. Instead of using the kit supplied rope I went with Syren Ship Model Co. rope which does not have the fuzziness. For the ratlines I think I may have gone a little too large (.45mm) & didn't notice until I had a few of them in place. For this 1:85 scale model I spaced them at 5mm apart.View attachment 554770View attachment 554771
Other then the rigging I upgraded a few other items including the life boat which is the Vanguard Models 18ft. cutter.View attachment 554778
The only thing, I am not happy with- THE WEBLINGS- I have allays kearnes that the diameter shoud be 4 to 5 times thinner than the shrouds.-sorry, el capi.
I habe build it. got the kit to my 50 years birthday, sn it must 32 years ago

I believe you are speaking about the ratlines. Their diameter has nothing to do with the size of the shrouds. The shrouds for the main mast, foremast, and mizen were all different as they were a proportion of their respective stays, but the lower mast and topmast ratlines were always about 1 1/2" in circumference no matter the size of the shrouds. I believe this was similar for most if not all, European navies.

Here's my process for fitting the cannon carriage wheels to the axles. Occre tells me to use brass rod for the axles but the rod is too small for the wheel holes making for a sloppy fit. It took me a few days to discover that a tooth pick is just the right size for the axles which was great because who doesn't have a pile of
tooth picks:). I dry fitted the wheels to the axle then fitted it to the carriage & poked tiny pilot holes on the axle for the brass pins. Using my handy dandy Arrowmax I drilled the holes for the wheel pins & snipped them to size.
It's a good feeling when a homemade solution works out & that Arrowmax drill is becoming one of my favorite tools. Couldn't imagine drilling those holes with a hand pin vise.View attachment 436712
I find that the Arrowmax has one 'annoying' downside, that is it goes into reverse when switched to stop, so takes another press to finally stop. But it's useful at times, annoying at others. :(:)

Supplying too small dia. brass for axles seems a common error with OcCre. I keep a stock of various sizes of brass rod for such events
