La Soleil Royal 1:90 Scale (ZHL) A Bandido Build

been on the cannon install for 2 days and have 3 main deck cannons complete, they are not perfect by any means but not bad! a lot of work!!!!! also I used the smallest blocks I had 2 x 3 mm I do believe they are out of scale?? at least for the cannon rigging but all the ones from the builds I have been watching look about the same? I could have probably used 1 x 2 mm blocks but finding them in the Philippines is not possible and to rig them if I did find them, I would need a Microscope to rig them:)

Well done

weekly update: Not much to report I decided to use a 2 x 3mm block to rig my cannons, so I had to order them with that I ordered a inventory of rigging lines in dark brown and linen color, some rings and eye pins and a couple sizes of black and brown wire. looks like it will arrive end of this month!! predrilled the holes for the cannon mounting pins. worked on the bow installed 2 doors in the openings on the front deck with hinges installed pins on each side of the lower gun ports simulating the interior wale gun rigging bolts. Gilbert and Vfordyce did that on their builds I think it adds to the overall appearance of the ship!! Think I will take a break till the supplies I ordered arrive! Have a little finish carpentry work to do on my house window trim!

looking really nice Bandido

well I finally decided to purchase that building slip I have read everything I can find on it and all references sound positive the slip I made is just too cumbersome and rigid, that is how I justify my toys it's easy isn't it:) The ship kits I buy are inexpensive compared to the toys I buy to build them:rolleyes:

Still waiting for my reorder of rigging blocks for the cannons, originally ordered 3mm way to small must have had a Senior Moment when I ordered those :) So to keep myself busy while I wait, I started working on tapering all the masts and yards or spars used my lathe, and it worked great as illustrated in the below picture. On the Yards I used that support to help decrease the wobble. the masts I did not need it just made sure the connecting points were as close to dead center as I could get. I used the drill chuck on my small table saw to turn the small parts. it will take a few days, but it is better than tapering by hand for weeks with cramped hands!!

what a good idea. I think I will try that. I get a lot of wobbling and instead of using chisels, I have been using only sandpaper on the small diameter yards

Jack that's what I have been using sandpaper, for me the dowels are too small to use chisels,
Finished tapering the masts and the yards. I wanted to stain the masts yards and parts in a med brown color. I have a couple different standard wood stains that I use but I am not a stain fan for me it is very inconsistent depending on the wood the grain you name it!! this is especially true on wood models due to the scaling down any inconsistency in how the stain takes there and it shows up. One of the loves is leather work and, in that hobby, dying leather is very important, the dyes are consistent, so I tried a sample on a dowel I had and guess what it works GREAT!! the color is Tite the Scheen is mellow, I attached a photo of the stuff I am using, water-based gel it comes in all kinds of colors, I purchased this brand at Tandy leather! Just thought i would mention it to anyone who has had or is having issues with stain!!

Bandido, you’re doing a great job, very impressive.
Thanks jay I love modeling but at times it's a lot of tedious work!! and compliments on the work a hobbyist does is well appreciated!!

I love your stain and found a place in Montreal that sale it.
Been working on the Foremast I have it completed I did the I used Leather dye medium brown for the masts and did the trestle trees black India ink I still have a little touchup to do on the lower trestle tree band, but it is all but done!! I am going to leave it in 3 sections and will try to do the standing rigging in sections when the time comes! I think it will be easier that way, at least I hope so! Next, I am going to do the Bow sprint, which looks changeling to say the least, Still waiting for my blocks from China so I can complete my cannon rigging, it's taking a while, Holiday over there I'm told IMG_20221003_111345 (3).jpg

finished most of the Bowsprit, gammoned it down, installed the bow cannons and doors, thought it would be easier to do the bowsprit prior to doing the front bling, bling!! now to finish the rest of the bow ornamentation. received my building slip today from Germany, I think i will take a break from the ship and assemble the slip! I won't use it on this model but on the Druid when i start it next year
