Le Soleil Royal ZHL Build Log [COMPLETED BUILD]

Makes perfect sense Vic and the pins will only add to strength. The big thing is to allow for enough drying time. PVA is only really dry after at least 48 hours and solidifies completely only after two weeks. And to be very honest with you - my experience with Titebond has not been the greatest.

Good to know. What do you advise?

I started off with Titebond III and just found that in China's extreme humidity it was "less than satisfactory". The other thing is that when it dries, it yellows. I bought the cheapest Chinese PVA that I could find and it is simply wonderful. But ... that doesn't help you. Most Dutch modelers (and the vast majority of them all build large Man-O-Wars) use Bison D2 and are very happy with it (I'm not sure about availability in the USA though). In the USA I have only heard good things from Weldbond.

I like the Weldbond and have been using it for glueing metal to wood and it seems to work well. You can get it at True Value if you have one in your area. You can't beat epoxy if it really needs to be stuck but it is often a pain to work with.

Question about gluing: Do you have to scuff up the surfaces before applying PVA glue? I don't but now I am thinking about it and wonder if this would make a better bond.

This is my third ship, and the Titebond has always worked wonderfully well on the decks. Just make sure they're firmly down, press on them to make sure, and let it set. Never had any problems with decks. I have had problems with hull planking, especially the second planking.

I thought about it, but they would have to be smaller than .4mm to be in proper scale. And you’d hardly be able to see them in my opinion.

One thing though to keep in mind: ZHL says that the scale is 1:90 which is NOT correct.
See https://threedecks.org/index.php?display_type=show_ship&id=1917 for the dimensions of the ship
If you take the size of the model, the scale is more 1:70
Thanks, Gilbert. I was quoting someone from Model Ship Building for Dummies for the size of treenails for ships at 1:74. So the .4mm would be close for our Soleil. It’s a website I subscribed to because I’m a dummy. It cost me $45. The only problem with the website is it originates in Canada and I think his native French gets in the way of explanations sometimes.
