Here is my ugly first layer hull planking.... next step is sanding, filling, more sanding and proper second layer planking so I will forget this messy look... to bad, photos will stay here for a while as a reminder ..




Now, I worked a bit on deck planking... From the beginning of this journey, I did not like the deck planking pattern included in kit, so will attempt not to follow it (kind of a flat, straight planks) and will try to adopt planking symmetry from French Le Requin, kind of pattern I saw on this forum from some other members. Not sure if it will be successful but will try...

My attempt will go into this direction:


So for the beginning, I marked down the middle planking formation, using ship gun as a reference point.





Then give it a bit of curving with attempt to follow ship' deck edges... guessing if those builders were successful maybe I can do it on the smaller scale... It will all depends on how good I will be able to bend the planks laterally.





For deck planking I will use maple strips, 1x4mm I have on stock. I think with kit included veneer I might not be able to do bending.. I have tried and break few so decided not to use them...
The biggest challenge with this kit is that deck and hull plans included in it, are not in 1:1 scale so it is harder than usual to locate marking points, but will be able to figure it out..

Then for French-type vessel, I will go with French version of shifts of butts.. The "board" will be 100mm long and shits will be ...

I had made some mistakes so need to redo my first few planks on the deck... so here is the new layout..



Then next step is to trace the hull curvature so I can continue with deck planking... for that I made a special tracing tool, very advanced.. 50mm plank with a pencil hole on the top and curved bottom for smooth deck following..



I put a piece of paper on the deck where tracing will take place..



First tracing run...



With corrections



Now lets transfer this model to the stronger paper so I can use it few times..



And the template is done..



Now, lets jump on planks...

Testing the template...
Now, let's create that curving section. First I was planing to lay down one plank at the time and curve it in the process, but was not able to produce adequate results so decided to lay down 5 planks on the piece of paper... glue it with white and D3 glue, mark down with pencil simulating caulking and let it dry..



Once dry I cut the excess paper..


transfer the template...





and cut the boards using strong scissors. It is critical to cut very carefully since the wood can split lengthwise if the cut is too strong. So sharp scissors and slowly... or any other method will do. Then started to shape the planks.... filling like those guys from Forget in Fire...



Then I removed excess paper from the back but not completely since my template will fell apart..



So the result is here..





Lets test it on the deck..





Ok, looks promising...



Glue it and let it dry..

To simulate as close as possible desired deck planking schema, I have added two board/planks to the end of curved planking area..



It is 3mm x 1mm Swiss pear plank which I am guessing will give a nice contract between two maple planks areas... This plank has to be sanded, to the level of deck planking..



Bending was not bad at all, plank was put into water basin for few minutes and then bended and glued following the shape. Nails are here just to secure it while drying..

While this was drying, I planked bulwarks which will be painted in red after but wanted to have a plank shape that will be visible thru the colour.










Ok, not it is time to shape the Swiss plank.. using various tools but not sanding paper, the hight is lowerred to the maple plank level, which is 1mm..

Unless there are some specific requirements to have different sides, not quite sure what is this about...

Then, all gloves are down, so I have made decision to finish deck planking in most likely non fully historical fashion, but...



The area marked with arrow is part of my finger' skin left after I kept pressing planking and not realizing CA was on my fingers...





I was able to break the, not sure how to call it,



... so had to make two new using planking 2mm from the kit..



And with triangle file made all needed details..

OK, so my unorthodox main deck planking is done..







My deck planks will be 100 mm long so need to simulate this length using a very fancy tool.



Slight push into planks







And now one of my favourite part, deck scraping.. Using scrapping tool (actually I purchased this tool which is used for making violins) I have start scrapping. Some areas do have extra glue visible under the light so those are sanded carefully before scraping, making sure not to leave many sanding marks, with 240 grid paper.

Since I am in a planking mood, lets continue with upper deck planking...

First, I marked down the centre line which will be used to put a first plank. Plan is to have three planks on both sides on the main plank, and then curved planks, following the curvature of the deck, meeting with middle planks somewhere on the deck.. I also used a pencil to simulate caulking but I run the line after I put plank in place, that is why the second pencil line is on the deck as a left over from marking the plank.



A bit unusual approach makes sure deck curvature is followed but starting outer planks first and driving towards the middle planks..

The maple planks are very useful for this type of small lateral curving and there is no need for water baths in order to make them a bit curved. For glue I used CA since it is a bit difficult to keep the planks curved for longer time, while white glue is drying.. Hence, some CA marks and parts of the skin on planks..

The critical part is making sure 90 degrees angle is on the middle planks.









And scrapping... will take care of those CA marks with no issues. Again, maple planks are very easy to scrap and are leaving very smooth surface.





And close to completed upper deck. The extra planks were cut from the edges and a bit of sanding is done to smooth the edges. I left planks on the bulwarks areas since I will be adjusting the opening for bulwarks before mounting the deck.

Today, I worked on gun carriages. Needed to have one for fitting test but since I made a small mount template, decided to do them all..

First, removing all (or majority) of laser burrs and glue parts with a help of a template..





And few completed..



I am planning to paint them all in red to match the areas on the ship, but first painted bulwarks and refreshed the paint on other already painted ship parts..

I wanted to make sure that guns will fit nicely into port lids and frame so I assembled one sample..



All my carriages will be painted in red, so after glueing all carriages, the first layer is done..





Second layer was done by putting them all on the dual tape and paint them this way instead of holding one carriage at the time..





I decided not to use provided rounded stock for axels but instead will make my own out of 3x3 mm.











To break out axle making routine, I decided to work on finishing up hull and getting it ready for second plank layer. The other reason is that I wanted to work on hull while deck frame has to be added on and at the same time I was a bit afraid that sanding (actually not paying to much attention while pushing the sand block) might damage the deck frame and other items..

Sanding, sanding, sanding, using different tools...



pushing in nails so I don't damage my scraping tool.









Then a\ layer of wood putty was added.. it appears to be too much of it, but sanding will revile majority of first planking layer... this putty is used just to smooth out the curvature of a hull..





After overnight drying, will continue with sanding..
