NORSKE LOVE - Billing Boats 1:75 scale

Thanks Maarten!
Actually I had not considered that, as I just used them. Would it look better in your opinion to make them flush with the hull or less proud of the hull? I wanted them to be gold. The lids will be red with a gold Lions head. In fact they probably used the same ones from the Vasa kit! ROTF
Hi Dean,

These frames you often see in kits as this is an easy construction.
In reality they would have been flush, see the picture you posted.

If you prefer gold frames for aesthetic reasons than that can be a choice offcourse.

Here is the red…I thinned all the boards as much as possible. I might be able to get a little thinner.
As far as black windows, I’m afraid they would blend into the background.

Imho: gold+red is more ‘distinguished and tasteful’. Gold+black gives a to hard contrast. But for this time: what is the opinion of the Admiral? (I’m putting my money on ‘gold+red) Perhaps the captain can deal with that, Dean.
Regards, Peter

Good morning Dean. Firstly it is so good to see you work on your NL again. As we have come to expect your craftsmanship is from the top drawer. I had to laugh when you said “this at the ugly stage” as I thought that’s my finished productROTF.The red windows didn’t work for me, however with “all the extra work” gold framing etc I believe these would work.
Since you asked... I suppose it does look a bit clunky as it sits there. The carvings in front of it 'announce' the scale leaving the frame looking a bit out of scale.
now you know why I never ask Paul for his opinion as I would have to redo my whole ship ROTF
Joke aside, wonderful work Dean - as always.
Cheers Grant

Yeah, “clunky” is pretty honest! ROTF
But I appreciate his honesty. My wife told me once, do you want me to lie to you or tell you the truth. So I said I will take the truth, even if it hurts, because if you want constructive criticism you need the truth.

Thanks Grant!

Good thing you didn't give me permission to comment on your hair ROTF ROTF ROTF.

"Adulting" can be a hard road, Dean...many sacrifices...
There is a story behind the long hair!
I had short hair when Covid started. And me and the wife were fortunate enough to work for companies that were onboard with working from home. My wife is high risk with high blood pressure and asthma. So we were in lockdown and didn’t go anywhere for almost a year. We ordered groceries to be delivered and we didn’t go out. At that point I stoped getting haircuts, because it was an unnecessary risk. After a year I started wearing my hair in a ponytail.
When things were good enough to go back in the office, I joked that I would not cut my hair until Covid was over. It would serve as a visual reminder of how long it has been going on.
But 2 years later I realized I was going to look like Rip Van Winkle before Covid ended, and it’s still around! So I resigned to getting a haircut and donated my hair to be used for a wig for cancer patients.
So all is well that ends well! ;)
And that’s the story of how I ended up with hair halfway down my back! ROTF

Wow! Thats just outstanding Dean! When I retired 4.5 years ago, I let my hair grow for 9 months but absolutely could not stand it and cut off never to be grown out again, I hope.
Well long hair is more work! Harder to shampoo, dry and groom. I mostly kept it in a ponytail and out of my face. But due to Covid it made the most sense at the time to let it grow and stay away from the barber shop. At times I would have my wife braid it for the Viking look. ROTF

So what colors did the original Norwegian Lion look like aft? Btw, I find galleries pretty tricky. I think you’re doing great.
I have yet to see any actual photos of the Norske Love. Only thing I could find was similar Norwegian and Danish ships that were black, gold and had red windows.
Thanks for the compliment. It has been challenging so far because the walls for the windows have compound curves in the back and conical curves on the sides. But it makes the galleries look more elegant.

Here's a link to a replica of a similar Swedish ship, originally launced in 1738.

Thanks for sharing…
That is similar, but it is flat across the back and has other differences in construction and style. The problem is color schemes varied for different countries and ships.
At the beginning of this build log (page 1) I showed some references I found. I even included that ship. ;)

Last night I put the trim boards on the back gallery wall…
IMG_5843.jpeg
Then I painted it gold…
you may notice I also painted the upper and lower edges of the lower trim black in preparation to paint the face gold.

Looks like I need to do some final sanding on one of the upper boards.
Anyway…this is how she sits now…

I realized that I can go ahead and sand the corner piece flush with trim boards, as a flat will average across that area for the figure in the future. And the scroll will be under the feet of the figure, not the column the figure is attached to.
So I will paint the lower trim gold, and probably start on the carvings for the lower areas of the galleries on this starboard side.
Some people switch from side to side and do the same amount of work to each side concurrently. I do not work that way. I like to get enough done on one side to find any potential pitfalls during the process of getting to the final details of the woodworking. That way I learn from the first side and don’t repeat any mistakes. ;)
And finally, I have decided to go with red windows on gold gallery walls. I think it is a visually pleasing combination and fits the overall color scheme. However I am going to experiment on ways to get the window boards thinner.

I think I am working the same way ……. Only now not in wood. ;)

That’s a good choice, Dean. (And for sure your Admiral will like that to.;))

Unfortunately the Admiral is indifferent! She could care less, doesn’t even care to see it. It will remain in my hobby room, at least until my son takes it from me! ROTF
The windows will go in later, so I have time to figure out something for them. Small scale difficulties! ;)
