NORSKE LOVE - Billing Boats 1:75 scale

I like the carving. I like the doors. But when put together something looks off (just my opinion), like everything is crowded in the middle. I think I would try moving the doors outboard a bit or add carvings on the other side of the doors to balance it out. What do you think?

I am going to adjust the leaves to the sides of the bowsprit, that way they won't be as close to the doors. I can also move the doors some. I just set them in place to look at it, so nothing glued yet! ;)

So…I was going to work on the trim at the top of the wall. However I got creative…lol.
My sketch…

Where will it go?

Still a lot of work to go on it, and it will be painted gold. Opinions requested…too much? Or is it what the doctor ordered? ;)
Looks very nice, Dean. About stain of gold: perhaps make 2 outline paper mold with the 2 color options? Then you can get a quick impression.

I modified and finished the carving for the bowsprit. It didn’t look good stained, it was too close in color to the wall. So on with the gold!
I just sat it and the doors in place, to get an idea of how it will look.
Its not against the wall fully, which makes it look thicker than it is. However I think it should be a little thinner. So I will work on that.

Reading through the various posts, there appears to be consensus on the decoration being on the large side. When looking at it, from close range, it might appear to be the case.
However, bear in mind we're looking at a build in progress, with little more than some decks and bulkheads (no offense, Dean). Just step back a little and try to imagine how this model will look once the hull is completed with all the nitty gritty details, the masts and bowsprit attached and the standing and running rigging in place. This decoration then will slip a little more into the background and, in my not so humble opinion, will blend beautifully with it's surroundings.

But hey, you never know, when (not if) the Lion roars again, we might see a complete change of direction...:p

I would love to see the tools that you used in this carved masterpiece. Are you sure that there was no CBD or other assisting enhancement? Rich

;)
Rich, I'm with you; his accuracy is otherworldly.

Lol…no enhancements Rich, I’m drug free!
Here are the tools used…

Proxxon with dental bur, xacto knife, jewelers file, rat tail file. And of course there was steel wool and a paint brush. ;)

The size of crest and spacing to doors look much better now.

It will be good to see the final installed version and how well it will be.

Johan, I am sure some people will not like it. It is art, which is subjective. I came up with a floral type carving to be added around the bowsprit, and wanted it to be tall. I’m not even 100 percent happy with my design. ;)
There is trim and doors to be added at the small wall at the bow. So it tends to look crowded, but if you look at some of the ornate ships, they were crowded with decorations. So I am of the opinion that one fairly large carving is okay, because after that it is void of anything but two doors. So I was just trying to make it look a little more ornate, while working with a small area.
In conclusion, I agree that once the bow is completed, that this decoration will be more subtle. And thank you for your input. ;)

You're welcome!
Based on the colorful decorations we see on ie the Batavia and on numerous paintings of contemporary ships, it might be even safe to say you could add a tad more color to the floral decoration, other than gold.

At last, the bow wall is finished with the addition of the trim piece I made, and adding the door assemblies.
A few notes, the placement of the door hinges are such that they swing open towards port and starboard. This is necessary because of the triangular deck area and half wall that will be there. That’s the only way they could open! ;)
And I added some bolt heads around the flange area of the carving. This indicates the carving was not only for decoration, but as a functional piece to support the bowsprit. Artistic license here…lol. But hey, it’s me…remember? :p

Now I can move to the stern area that needs to be built prior to planking… ;)

Thanks for stopping in and being a part of my build!
