I also changed the upper scroll here…

A lot of lessons learned on this side. No two scrolls are the same, but that’s because no two are the same height and width. That’s due to the ship design. But I also was making it up as I go, and being creative with them. ;)

Good morning Dean. You are sending it. I’m in awe of your and Peter (@Ptèr ) carving skills. I was never a fan of the NL as a ship, however you are changing that opinion. As for kits and modellers wants…..we get what we pay for…the commercial kit manufacturers are there to make money through “mass” production so other than a couple of Niche companies the quality will be crap. Quality builders will always buy better wood etc…..unless like myself we just make do with what we have. Anyway enough blah blah, I am tired of send “I love it” emojis. ROTF. Beautiful Dean and the Red is a wonderful contrast. Cheers Grant

Great progress since I last checked in. There is a wonderful uniformity in your build with the individual differences in the scrolls just enough to make one realize that it is still a handmade model after all. The latter is what authenticity is all about, in my opinion.

A great job till now, Dean, on this ‘never-ending-port-side’ of your NL. :) Your steady hands shows now different nicely shaped scrolls that complement each other. It’s all about the overview of all the details.
Regards, Peter

Thank you Grant! I appreciate the comments! ;)

Thank you Peter, I still have a few more tasks prior to switching sides. But after I complete the other side, I can work on the deck furnishings and the bow and stern. All fun areas. ;)

Thank you Heinrich, handmade it is! And even the many coat of arms all have individual differences. ;)

This carving society is driving me nuts!
Luckily my current build doesn't ask for anything fancy like carvings, otherwise I might be lured into ginong it a try.
Having said that, yours are well crafted and surely add value to your model.
Thank you Johan, I appreciate that! It is rather fun, at least for me, as it allows some artistic creativity. ;) I am looking forward to the stern carvings… I think? ROTF

With all the added details I do dig the colorscheme. Nice work so far, hope you can copy to the other side.
Thank you Peter!
No worries on doing the other side, as I remember everything I have done, step by step. In fact, I am trying to finish this side so I can get started on the other side. But I have done so much with railings, scrolls, stain, paint, nails, etc. that I realize it will be a lot of work to get the other side to this point.
But the other side should be better, because I learned from this side. ;)
I really want to do the figurehead and the rails at the bow! Can’t wait to get the Lion on the ship! But I can’t start until I finish the other side…and I can’t finish the other side until I finish this side…so…back to work…;)

Finished the cats head on this side…installed the pulleys and painted it, then carved a tiny Lions head for the end. It’s about 5mm in size!
It is just sitting on the deck, not in the correct place against the rail because the paint is still drying! ;)

Wondering if I should paint the end face gold too, or just leave the Lion gold? Opinions?

Good morning Dean. You are faking it- that is a 3D printed little Lion ROTF ROTF. Jokes aside what tools do you use for your fine carving? And what wood. My decorations are a way off but will make or break my Xebec and I’m clueless here. Cheers Grant
I like to use pear wood, but sometimes I use basswood. The basswood is easier to get and cheaper. Boxwood and pear are probably the best. But I will use whichever I can get my hands on…lol. ;)
As far as tools…I have palm handle carving tools, u gouge, v gouge, etc. and I have dental burrs that I use in my Proxxon rotary tool.
I also use files and my x-acto knife.
It all really depends what I am doing. For tiny stuff too small for the gouges, like the Lion head and coat of arms, its dental burrs and x-acto. For larger stuff, like the scrolls, I use the gouges. The files I use to clean up and smooth any rough cuts.
Hope that helps.

Wow Dean, just wow! The depth and details on the lions head and face is awesome. You don't have to worry about the stern carvings. I think you will manage this perfectly. Great job! Thumbs-Up
Thank you Peter! I messed up the first try…lol. It is so small I had to learn how much wood to take off, which is very little! And it had to be done with the Proxxon and dental burrs, and the x-acto knife.

The cathead-lion (and "no" cat) is looking very good - Very well done
I would keep the background black - with this the view is concentrating on the lion and the small carving is more visual
so please based on my subjective and objective opinion -> No gold at the background
