As we close this Annual Donations Drive, I want to thank you all for your Generosity in Donating to Ships of Scale. It is Greatly Apreciated !!!
Ships of Scale continues to explore exciting things to offer to the Ship Building Community.

NORSKE LOVE - Billing Boats 1:75 scale

I am glad you are in synch with your figurehead (honestly if you are talking to a figurehead and vice versa, it scares me a bit), I always ask myself if I took the right pill in the morning :p

But...kidding aside, I am not happy with your emblems either. They look lonely like a spot. There are four panels on each side, but only one emblem per side. Also, being the deck a bit dark, for my taste (IMHO), the panels are also in the same color tone you might need to put something lighter in those panels. Maybe be maple moldings inside the pannels? It is ONLY my personal observation, and most likely the only one. Take it lightly, mone Amigo!

Of course I’m joking and don’t converse with my figurehead! :p
As far as the deck and walls go…
First, that is where the emblems go according to the instructions, and there are only enough provided to do two panels each side, and also on the walls I will be building on the upper deck. So a common theme. Two emblems per wall. It would look too busy if there was an emblem in every inset, IMO.
Second, as far as shades go, the lighting plays a big factor in whether it looks light or dark. But the deck is darker than the inset panels on the walls. But not unlike like the BN, I have a vision of the big picture…with gratings, ladders, railings, etc. and it will be a while before all that comes together. So it’s really too early to tell how everything will tie together. I am only doing decks and walls until I fair the hull and plank it. Then I will add everything else to the ship. If at any point I think the lighter inset walls is not working with everything else, I can easily darken them. So we must be patient and wait for the big picture! For now we only have walls and the deck. ;)
Hope that makes sense.

Ps - I always appreciate feedback and constructive criticism.

So…Let’s back track…
I took the kit provided lazer cut wall frame and the ply backing that was a basic simulation of block paneling, then added columns and trim to make them look more ornate. I then stained the added trim and used steel wool to give them highlights. Then I added a flat clear for more depth.
Paul said they looked elegant, Peter said they looked good. Uwek liked the wall color. Then Paul said he liked the deck color, Johan said more grey and darker. Then many others liked the deck. But Jimsky says it’s too dark.
Then I also scraped the stain off the wall insets with a razor and sanded, and decided to go with a light stain for contrast. Then Paul said they looked spartan? But he first said elegant…so I’m getting confused at this point. I decide to add the emblems before making any further changes. Then I decide they blend into the light wood and need to be outlined. Jimsky says they look like spots and need to be in every panel.
As you might imagine my head is spinning and I can’t possibly listen to everyone or I’ll be chasing my tail, because there is no common consensus…lol. So who do I listen to? Myself! And my figurehead! He can’t be taken lightly! :p
So this is one of those things that you have to take a step back and give it some time. I think I need to do some deck planking and revisit the walls again later. ;)

The simple answer to who do you listen to is - You and ONLY you (not the figurehead :D)! It is your model, you have an envision of things putting together, you are the shipwright to NL, you are the captain!

The truth is, I will always do what “I” like. But I do consider everyone’s input. Especially if everyone is saying the same thing. But if the opinions are conflicting, then I have to go with my instinct. ;)

Not being happy yet, I opted to use black around the emblems. I also created an enclosure to place under the deck opening for the grating, which I then painted black inside.
Now I can start deck planking…

I thought they looked ok before, but the Lion said…

And when your figurehead starts talking like that, you better listen! :p
The darker shadow around the emblems look great!! And that lion  I've read that being in the African bush and hearing a lion roar is one of the most horrifying sounds one will ever hear.

So I darkened the walls and painted the emblems with some gold and added some details in black…I may add a board at the bottom edge in between the column bases.

Not sure yet though because the Lion says…

Touch them again…I dare you!!!!
I actually like the darkened panels better as well. Like you say step back, and revisit it later (when the lion isn't so hungry):D

It is an INCREDIBLE sound David. You cannot believe how deep that sound is, especially in the still of night when the males decide they need some company. Within a few hundred meters, it literally makes the ground shake.

Thanks Daniel, that's the plan! Get back to deck planking!
Plus once the deck is above and below the walls, I will have a better idea of the big picture. And when the deck furnishings, railings, gratings, etc. go on, it will all come together. But that is so far off at this point. Just trying to get the decks and walls in place so I can fair the hull! ;)

I had to read a lot of replies to get back on track. And many opinions about colors and shades. (and not about '50 shades of .......')
I would wait with further adjusting the color / tint on the panels and emblems until the deck construction is a bit further. Then you get the total picture with shadow effect and light incidence.
And with the detail pictures it shows differently than what you see yourself.
And the small 'inlets' in the panels immediately give a completely different picture.
Just like you say: Keeping the big picture in mind.
Regards, Peter

I planked the forecastle deck. Those who pay close attention will notice something different on the right side wall. ;)

I just spent the last half hour catching up with your entire build log so far Dean, and glad that I did. It is a top effort by all accounts, despite the disturbing amount of time you spent with the figurehead ROTF
Looking forward to all your future updates. It is quite an education. well done Thumbsup

Thank you Mark, I appreciate it. Seems me and the figurehead will spend more time together in the near future, as I’m not finished with it. ;)
