Hi folks, It’s Model shipyard here again.

My last thread for “Le cygne” was just like few days ago, how time flies LOL(well just in case you don’t know, i did just post that thread few days ago, just a joke, avaliable here:https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/threads/le-cygne-1806-in-scale-1-48-by-modelship-dockyard.7971).

In the Cygne post a lot folks showed interests to the “Blandford”, so let me do a small introduction of this product. We started this project about 5 years ago, and finished designing 10 month later, more designing details will come later in the thread. Due to our production ability at the time, we didn’t produce much, only 20 for the first batch. We sold two versions of the Blandford, Pear and Cherry. Sadly, after the first batch was sold, we stopped the production of all our products due to some personal reasons. From the start of this year, we started to have thoughts on “reviving” Blandford, so as we now have such a good opportunity, I think it’s time.

We did use “The Anatomy” , “English Man of War 1650-1850” and “The Arming and Fitting” etc as reference book during the designing process. Mainly based on the NMM plan, and we are now getting the licence.

The carvings, ill use the head figure as an example to show how we design them, this process is the same for all our ships. We first collect information for the ship’s carvings, from books, models etc. For this head figure, we know that it’s a lion so we collected some pictures of real ship lion head figures:


Then we find a painter&designer(we’ve changed our painter just few days ago, to a Post-graduate student of the famous UAL-CSM), and draw the head figures using photos, this is what we get:


We then do the 3D modeling, and end up with this:

Then using the 4 axis CNC, to get the final Box/Pear wood carvings:

Note that this was our design level 5 years ago.

Maybe the following topic about the changes of the british lions during the time (made by my friend and decoration specialist Willi alias @schifferlbauer ) is of some interest for you and your designer.... There are some small and fine differences in the lions over the years

The 1/48 scale is better in my opinion. You can really "go to town" with detailing the small parts.

Maybe the following topic about the changes of the british lions during the time (made by my friend and decoration specialist Willi alias @schifferlbauer ) is of some interest for you and your designer.... There are some small and fine differences in the lions over the years

I would like to show you guys our last pilot model, however, we lot almost all the photo that shot during the testing period, and we gave the ship away, so the only thing that I can do now is to show a player's model. We also made some new changes in the past few days, such as more sophisticated ribs and pre-made deck, and we will 100% start a new pliot model soon, to test these changes and give you guys a better view.
