The "Chinese" Harvey

ARRR Jim Lad! Yes, the mighty chopper. It's just a cutting jig to slice materials at different angles. Made one decades ago but it got lost via various moves...

Anyhoo, couldn't sleep the other night so went research mad. As a result I have LOADS of pics from various other folks builds of the Albatross, Pride of Baltimore and a few other similar ships. I just hope no one minds me clogging the page up! So make some popcorn and behold.....

Yeah, see, I am unsure how to start and end the lashings for the bowsprit. So, advise from the community would be greatly apricated.

Thanks for all these pics, Zoopher. Unfortunately, this one shows nothing about how they start or end the lash (unless these old eyes are unable to see it). It appears the modeler simply hid the rope ends under in the keel slot by glueing? Which, at this scale, is fine with me. Still fantastic research on your part! Good on you, sir!

Hello again chaps, some progress made. Finished bowsprit and yards, just researching stuff to afix to the sail poles, sticks and stuff. This task has bee made simpler as I have just received a copy of Rigging Fore and Aft Craft by Lennarth Peterson. Awesome, buy it now gents! It comes in 3 chapters, the first a British naval cutter, second the French lugger and the third and longest chapter the American schooner! I'll include a few shots of this chapter, hoping I'm not breaking any copyright laws in the process!20240111_070238.jpg20240111_070217.jpg20240111_070155.jpg20240110_104840.jpg20240110_104716.jpg20240110_104737.jpg20240110_215419.jpgBUY THIS BOOK NOW!!!!20240111_054105.jpg20240111_054120.jpg20240111_054131.jpg20240111_054144.jpgThanks for looking!

Sweet! Nice rigging on the bowsprit. And thanks for the pics from the book. And as for copyright laws, I understand and appreciate them. People put an ENORMOUS amount of time and effort into these (especially when they require research). And I believe they should be compensated for their work. BUT, I also believe in the "Freedom of Information Act" (as I call it in my head) where anything I discover, learn, or know, that can help anyone else out, should be passed along to them immediately and gratis. JMHO.

And with that said, what is with the lower spar on your fore mast? Isn't it too long to sweep past the main mast? (I kid because I care!) But seriously WTF? Your "hero" status with me is being questioned. So HELP me worship you!!!

Totally agree regarding copyright, as for the spar I think I suffered a massive brain fart! Will correct this in the morning, meantime been making many many eyebolts for rigging and my head is spinning! The problem is I have very little info on this ship (The New Port 1/70) so have been trying to find info on other models and deciding what to add and what to leave off, aarrrghhh!!20240112_231128.jpgOops!20240112_224419.jpgOnly drawings I could find, and poor quality at that

Right. And your ship building skills are AWESOME! I am not only envious of your skills, but also your time! I've been "on podium" being and Instructor this week which is SUPER stressful for me and so I have not been able to work on my boat too much. Even though your posts have been inspiring me to go at it faster!

So, please tell us all about the eyebolts. What type of wire? What tools? What is the Zoopher secret sauce?

Cheers,

M.

Thank thee kind sir! Time I have much of being disabled and patience in spades. As for the eyebolts fine brass wire on a reel (can't remember gauge, 0.8mm) wrapped around a 0.7mm drill bit, manipulated with small flat nose pliers and cut over length so can be cut down to whatever dimensions required.20240113_062735.jpg20240113_062806.jpg20240113_062858.jpgSorted! PS, why won't emojis appear when I post?

Okay then! Sorry to distract from the poop discussion but...

I ordered some 22-gauge stainless wire. My cannon did not have trunnions but did have a hole drilled through where they should be. So the 22-gauge wire will hopefully become the trunnions. And then we'll see if it can also be used for eyebolts.

This is all working below the scale that my eyes can focus anymore so I'm not sure if this level of detail will work out for me. But your boat is looking fantastic, Zoopher!

Cheers,

M.

Dolphins beware! And the Fore mast is roughed in (not glued in). All the cannon are also balanced with the lead strips, so I guess that is positive progress?!? That Fore took about 20 minutes in the drill to tapper! This small scale sucks for things like that IMO. But the results are still soo satisfying.

Hey! The wire arrived! It is about 7F where I am in Ohio right now, and the wire was delivered on the porch outside, so I think I should let it normalize to the temps inside the house before I play with it. Probably tomorrow,
